Tettegouche

Overview

Tettegouche State Park offers a quintessential North Shore experience for RV travelers seeking the rugged beauty of Minnesota. Spanning over 9,000 acres, this park is renowned for its dramatic cliffs, inland lakes, and cascading waterfalls. Unlike highly manicured resorts, Tettegouche provides a scenic wilderness retreat where the focus remains on the natural landscape. Whether you are passing through on a Lake Superior circle tour or staying for a week of exploration, the park serves as a majestic gateway to the northern woods and a premier destination for those who appreciate untamed natural beauty.

Location & Surroundings

Located just off Highway 61 in Silver Bay, the park is positioned perfectly along the North Shore of Lake Superior. The surrounding terrain is defined by the Sawtooth Mountains and the vast expanse of the world’s largest freshwater lake. RVers will find themselves surrounded by dense forests of birch and pine, with several overlooks providing panoramic lake views that are among the best in the state. The proximity to the highway makes it easily accessible for travelers, yet the deep woods and rugged shoreline offer a sense of profound isolation and peace.

Amenities & Park Features

The primary area for RVers is the Baptist River Campground, which provides a comfortable home base within the woods. The park offers several electric hookup sites that accommodate a variety of rig sizes, though larger motorhomes should check site lengths carefully. Key features include:

  • Electric sites with 30-amp service located at the Baptist River Campground.
  • Access to a modern visitor center featuring interpretive exhibits and a gift shop.
  • Seasonal shower facilities and year-round vault toilets for camper convenience.

Each site typically features a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring for evening campfires under the stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is the main draw at Tettegouche. Visitors can hike to the High Falls of the Baptism River, which is the highest waterfall located entirely within the state of Minnesota. For those who enjoy heights, Shovel Point offers breathtaking cliffside vistas and world-class opportunities for rock climbing. The park also provides direct access to the Superior Hiking Trail, making it a hub for long-distance trekkers. A short drive south leads to the historic Split Rock Lighthouse, while the nearby Palisade Head offers even more dramatic shoreline photography opportunities and birdwatching.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and nature photographers who prioritize scenery and trail access over resort-style luxury. It is a fantastic fit for RVers traveling in smaller to mid-sized rigs who enjoy a quiet, natural atmosphere and the sounds of the wilderness. If your travel style involves birdwatching, hiking, or rock climbing, Tettegouche will likely be a highlight of your Minnesota journey. It is less suited for those seeking swimming pools or organized social activities, instead catering to those who find rejuvenation in the sound of crashing waves.

Roll the dice if you’re going to try, go all the way. otherwise, don’t even start. if you’re going to try, go all the way. this could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives, jobs and maybe your mind. go all the way. it could mean not eating for 3 or 4 days. it could mean freezing on a park bench. it could mean jail, it could mean derision, mockery, isolation. isolation is the gift, all the others are a test of your endurance, of how much you really want to do it. and you’ll do it despite rejection and the worst odds and it will be better than anything else you can imagine. if you’re going to try, go all the way. there is no other feeling like that. you will be alone with the gods and the nights will flame with fire. do it, do it, do it. do it. all the way all the way. you will ride life straight to perfect laughter, it’s the only good fight there is. -Charles Bukowski

Beautiful experience. Liked the location and how the campsites were far from each other like you don’t have to worry about waking up the family camping next to us. Very spacious and well kept campground. The restrooms and showers were clean and nearby too from our site #7. Would definitely recommend it.

One of the most fascinating waterfalls on the North Shore! The gorges the water runs through are amazing. Rough terrain getting to them. Not meant for inexperienced hikers but the walking and bike trails gets you to the main falls.

One of the prettiest state parks in Minnesota. If you ever visit from out of state its worth the drive and visit. Hikes and trails for every skill level with beautiful views of the north shore and glacier region.

Has a nice big visitors center, lots of parking, plenty of bathrooms and a gift shop/education area. Shovel Point trail is a shorter, faster type trail. Lots of stairs but a quick out and back for restful views, 35 mins probably.
