The Camp at Cloudcroft

On a family trip with my wife and little girls this summer, we found camp rio while just passing through and decided to stop and see if there was a tent space available for us. Fortunately it was midweek and there was! The staff was very accommodating and allowed us to choose a very charming little spot by the creek. It was perfect! Needless to say an overnight ended up being 3 nights. We fished in the creek, rode bikes and really enjoyed meeting others who were regulars at the camp. There was a campfire ban that was lifted in our second day and we were also really excited that we got to cook over the fire and roast some marshmallows. The owners were also very accommodating and friendly and made us feel like family. We wish we could’ve stayed longer but instead we’re just looking forward to next summer! This camp is now on our family’s summer itinerary and we hope to be able to return with an RV next year. If not, we still have our tents:)

Really enjoyed our multiple day stay here! We have tiny camper and two dogs and this was a perfect spot for us. It was quiet, felt private, and had a lot of communal areas including pavilions to sit under, a kitchen with a stove and hang out spot, and our favorite: a beautiful trail along a small creek. All of the hook ups at the site were nice and well maintained. We don’t use laundry or the showers so I can’t speak to that but I’m sure those were plenty fine. We had zero issues with the staff as they were laid back and easy to chat with. The location is great for visiting Cloudcroft or Alamogordo. Will stay again when we head this way next. Thanks for having us!

Different rules are enforced for different people. I’ll explain, but first the good: I stayed here for a month, and most of it was pleasant. The work-camper staff are so friendly and so helpful. I’d have given five stars until the last couple of days I was there. At the end there was a problem with a multi-campsite wedding party that acted as if they had rented out the whole campground, when in fact they did not. They flagrantly disregarded Quiet Hours until 1am. Quiet Hours are part of the Terms of Service, which means every guest is legally bound to obey them, and the campground is legally bound to enforce them. But when I emailed the owners about the problem, they didn’t seem to care. The owners repeatedly directed me to talk with their work-campers, refusing to answer my basic question about their official policy: “Is every guest expected to follow the Terms of Service, or are there different rules for different people?” If you read the other reviews here, you’ll see echoes of this problem. Mostly it’s a nice campground, but the owners have preferences for certain groups of people who they allow to break the rules.

This place is awesome. Everything about our stay was fantastic. From the friendly hosts to the chili cookoff to the beautiful location. No notes. Keep up the good work, Clay!

Quick summary: don't tent camp at the "Mountain View" site. I took my youngest son tent camping, and we stayed here because it was on our way to Cloudcroft where we went hiking the next day. The staff were welcoming, and the little stream is nice, but the "Mountain View" tent site (1) doesn't have a good view of a mountain, (2) doesn't have fire pits (though the the rest of the camp does), and (3) is adjacent to the highway, so it is difficult to sleep due to the vehicle noise. Furthermore, another group tent camping was loud, inconsiderate, obnoxious, and profane; they kept yelling profanities and honking their car horn, way after 10 pm and as early as 5 am. The staff did not enforce the quiet hours (10pm-8am) explicitly stated in the terms and conditions that we were required to sign. We have previously enjoyed camping at several of the public campgrounds near Cloudcroft, and they are more suitable than Camp Rio for tent camping and enjoying a camp fire.

Nice little campground in the middle of the Sacramento Mountains. Some of the sites are really close together and some are spread out. We don't have water at site 13 but our neighbor does so I asked if I could put a wye on his. Thankfully he's friendly and agreed. 50 amp in select sites and 30 for the rest. We will be coming up again as they had no problem with our bringing up our pack of six foster dogs.

First time visiting this place. We went camping and fishing (no luck) really liked how calm and peaceful it was until a big family came and they were pretty loud all weekend and their kids were throwing rocks and sticks at the ducks. We liked the amenities they offered from being able to take a shower to using their kitchen area our little stoves were kinda slow. We enjoyed sitting by the stream and watching the birds, ducks, doe, cows and hummingbirds. I didn't get a picture of the mama duck with her babies. We really loved watching the rain and hail. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a get away

BEWARE the cabin should get 0 stars. Jay and the woman that lives in the trailer beside the office are both terrible to work with. The check-in process for the cabins wasn’t secure. Our keys were just hanging up outside the office for anyone to grab because it was after hours (6pm). Good luck with getting any decent wifi while you’re there. There was no way to search for anything on our phones. We had to drive up the road to get a signal to make a phone call. Once we got inside the cabin we quickly realized that we weren’t able to stay at that property for the weekend. In addition to the lack of wifi, there were stains all over the bedroom floor, on the bed comforter, and in the bathroom (pictures included). The cabin overall felt claustrophobic and gross. Upon vacating the property, we were berated by the woman in the trailer next to the office for finding other accommodations and for bringing our issues to light with the booking agent.

Overall we had a great time. The park seems well maintained. Bathhouse was clean. Park hosts were friendly. But.....the spaces are way to close. The lay out of the spots make it claustrophobic. Also it forces campers to face each other.. like shared yard space if you will. Our doors literally opened in front of each other, no privacy at all. We have been to many rv parks and this was the tightest on space we have ever stayed at. Week days were not as busy. Overall we won't go back to this camp. Also you can't request a spot. They decide where to place you. If the spots were better thought out this would be great.. but unfortunately the way hookups are you have to face each other.
