The Coal Mine Campground & Canteen

Overview

The Coal Mine Campground & Canteen offers a classic Yukon experience for travelers navigating the scenic Klondike Highway. Known for its laid-back atmosphere and riverside charm, this park provides a welcoming rest stop for those journeying through the northern wilderness. It effectively balances essential camping necessities with the convenience of an on-site canteen, making it a staple destination for road trippers and adventurers exploring Canada's North. The park maintains a rustic, welcoming environment that reflects the rugged beauty of the surrounding territory.

Location & Surroundings

Situated on the banks of the mighty Yukon River, the park sits just north of the village of Carmacks. The surroundings are characterized by dense northern forests and the rushing water of the river, which has played a vital role in local history and transportation. Staying here allows travelers to immerse themselves in the boreal landscape while remaining within easy reach of the Klondike Highway, the primary route for those heading toward the historic gold fields of Dawson City.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features a mix of serviced and unserviced sites, including spacious pull-through spots designed to accommodate larger rigs. Guests have access to essential facilities such as clean showers, coin-operated laundry, and individual fire pits for evening gatherings. The standout feature is undoubtedly the canteen, which has earned a reputation among locals and travelers alike for serving homemade burgers and milkshakes, providing a high-quality meal option that saves guests from having to cook after a long day of driving.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore just minutes from their campsite. A short drive south leads to the Five Finger Rapids, a legendary navigational challenge for gold rush-era paddlers that now features a scenic boardwalk and lookout point. The area is also excellent for fishing, hiking, and learning about the history of the Little Salmon Carmacks First Nation. Many visitors use the park as a base to explore local interpretive trails that highlight the region's unique geology and mining heritage.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for long-haul RVers who appreciate a rustic, authentic Yukon vibe over a polished luxury resort experience. It is a perfect fit for history buffs and nature lovers who want a peaceful night’s sleep near the water before continuing their journey further north. If you enjoy a simple setup with easy highway access and the convenience of a well-regarded local eatery right on your doorstep, this park is an essential stop for your Yukon itinerary.

This is a great park with friendly family run service. The toilets, showers and washers are clean and tidy. Great view of the Yukon floating by. But the best part was the onsite burger van that also did ice cream. I would definitely recommend this place and will definitely return x

Tiny RV park but it has all the amenities and the host was incredibly friendly and accommodating. They were starting to close for the season so the place was a little messy but otherwise, great stop.

I love this place so much! Whether you’re paddling on the river, or driving along the highway, this is a must stop! The food is so good! Some of the best burgers I’ve ever eaten, and the pulled pork is insanely good! And all enjoyed with a nice view of the Yukon River, calmly flowing in front of your picnic table. They also have showers and laundry, which makes for such a great refresher if you’re on a long paddling trip.

Went here recently for a quick bite and let me tell you it was so delightful, the girl working, Layla, was so sweet and accommodating to me! I've never been so pleased. Thank you!
