The Great Divide Campground

Overview

The Great Divide Campground offers a peaceful retreat nestled in the heart of rural Sussex County. This park is known for its spacious, wooded sites and a layout that balances modern convenience with a genuine outdoor experience. Whether you are arriving in a large motorhome or a vintage travel trailer, the park provides a scenic and well-maintained environment where campers can disconnect from the city. The emphasis here is on community and nature, making it a staple for those seeking a quiet escape in Northern New Jersey.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Newton, New Jersey, the campground is surrounded by the rolling hills and lush forests characteristic of the Skylands region. The local geography provides a natural buffer from traffic noise, ensuring a tranquil atmosphere throughout the camping season. Visitors will appreciate the proximity to local farms and dairies, which adds to the rural charm of the stay. The park is conveniently located just far enough from the metro area to feel secluded while remaining easily accessible for a weekend getaway.

Amenities & Park Features

The facility is designed to accommodate various camping styles, offering full hookup sites with large pull-through options for big rigs. For recreation, the park features a sparkling Olympic-sized swimming pool and a private lake perfect for catch-and-release fishing or leisurely boating. Families often gather at the playground or participate in organized weekend activities. Practical needs are met with a well-stocked general store, clean laundry facilities, and reliable fire pits at every site, ensuring a comfortable stay without sacrificing the classic campfire experience.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Exploring the surrounding area reveals plenty of outdoor adventure for all ages. The campground is a short drive from High Point State Park, which offers stunning panoramic views of the tri-state area from the highest elevation in New Jersey. Nature enthusiasts can spend a day hiking the trails at the Delaware Water Gap or visiting the unique animals at Space Farms Zoo and Museum. For a slower pace, the historic downtown of Newton provides charming shops and local eateries, while the nearby Kittatinny Valley State Park is ideal for mountain biking.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is an ideal fit for family vacationers who value structured activities and a safe, social environment for children. It also appeals strongly to nature lovers who want a comfortable basecamp for exploring the scenic highlands. Because of its big-rig accessibility and level sites, it is a preferred choice for seasoned RVers looking for a high-quality stopover in the Northeast. If you prefer a wooded, community-focused park over a rustic boondocking site, this location will likely meet your expectations.

My friends and I have been coming to The Great Divide for almost 15 years, and it’s still one of our favorite places. The staff is always welcoming, the campground is super clean, and they always have fun activities going on. We’ve made so many great memories here over the years—it honestly feels like a second home. Can’t wait to come back again!

We had such a great time at The Great Divide Campground! There was so much for the kids to do—constant activities, games, and entertainment that kept them busy and happy the whole trip. The bathrooms were clean. The staff were super friendly and helpful from the moment we checked in to the moment we left. You can really tell they care about making it a great experience for everyone. Highly recommend for families looking for a fun and relaxing camping trip!

We've been coming here for 3 years but it seems like longer because it's been multiple stays for each year. We have brought friends here, made new friends here, and even my mom says it's her favorite place to be. Carmine and Lisa are wonderful owners who have put so much love and trust into this campground. We love the people, the staff, the grounds, the service, the cleanliness, the activities, the vibe, everything. I missed the drum circle this year. You guys all work so hard to make it a welcoming place that is safe AND fun! Thank you so much for continuing to improve things for future stays. Keep doing what you're doing. We love you all. -Nicheski Family

Been going to great divide for since 2018. I’ve camped there and I’ve “kinda” camped there. I’ve gone for 1 night and I’ve gone for many days. I’ve been there rain, shine, wind, cold and humidity. I’ve been bringing my kids there since they turned 1 years old and we’re already booked for next season. So I feel pretty qualified to say: This place feels like home, and I feel lucky every moment I get to spend there. Fast and thoughtful communication, flexible cancellation policy, live music, and fun for kids of all ages.
