Overview

The Parks At Chehaw Campground offers a unique blend of natural beauty and recreational variety within an expansive 800-acre conservation area. Situated within the historic Chehaw Park & Zoo, this destination provides a rustic yet comfortable base for exploring Southwest Georgia. The campground is well-regarded for its quiet atmosphere and deep connection to the local ecosystem, making it a peaceful retreat for travelers seeking more than just a standard roadside stop. It serves as a gateway to both wildlife education and outdoor adventure.

Location & Surroundings

Located on the outskirts of Albany, GA, the park is nestled along the banks of Muckalee Creek. The surroundings are characterized by towering pines and moss-draped oaks that create a dense, shaded canopy over much of the property. This setting provides a distinct sense of seclusion while remaining conveniently close to the urban amenities of Albany. Visitors can enjoy the sights and sounds of indigenous wildlife that frequent the forested areas surrounding the campsites, providing a truly immersive nature experience.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground is equipped to handle a variety of setups, offering full hookup sites with 30 and 50-amp electrical service. For those who prefer a more traditional experience, there are also partial hookup options and primitive tent areas. Key facilities include clean bathhouses, on-site laundry, and a large picnic pavilion perfect for group gatherings. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the access to over 10 miles of mountain bike trails and a nationally sanctioned BMX track located within the park boundaries.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the on-site Chehaw Zoo, which features a variety of exotic and native animals accessible via boardwalks. Guests can also enjoy an 18-hole professional disc golf course or explore the scenic hiking trails that wind through the wetlands. Just a short drive away, the Flint RiverQuarium and the Ray Charles Plaza in downtown Albany offer additional cultural and educational experiences. The Flint River itself is a popular spot for kayaking and fishing enthusiasts.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal choice for families with children who will benefit from the zoo, splash pad, and playground facilities right at their doorstep. It also appeals to outdoor adventurers and mountain bikers looking for technical trails and active recreation in a wooded setting. Great place to visit! Their Zoo is smaller than most, but has plenty of beautiful animals to see. The gift shop is reasonably priced as well. A good place to go with small children.

It was a nice zoo for the price. There were a lot of empty exhibits though and no concessions opened, other than a drink machine. Luckily I packed something. The alligator exhibit was pretty neat. It took us about an hour to go through.
