The Refuge on Roanoke Island
Overview
The Refuge on Roanoke Island offers a refined yet peaceful retreat for RVers looking to explore the coastal wonders of the Outer Banks in North Carolina. Unlike the busier beachfront hubs found further north, this park emphasizes a tranquil atmosphere where the natural beauty of the soundside takes center stage. It provides a modern and well-appointed home base for those who value privacy and high-quality infrastructure while being immersed in the unique maritime heritage of Wanchese.
Location & Surroundings
Situated on the southern end of Roanoke Island, the park is beautifully nestled within a lush maritime forest and salt marsh environment. The location in Wanchese offers a significantly slower pace of life than neighboring towns, characterized by working fishing docks and fresh seafood markets. Guests can enjoy sweeping, unobstructed views of the Roanoke Sound, making it an exceptional spot for photographers and birdwatchers who want to experience a quiet, secluded environment away from the highway noise.
Amenities & Park Features
This park is meticulously designed with modern conveniences in mind, featuring level concrete pads that easily accommodate even the largest Class A motorhomes. Every site is equipped with full hookups and reliable utility connections, ensuring a seamless and comfortable stay. On-site facilities include a refreshing seasonal outdoor pool, a modern bathhouse, and a community pavilion. The layout is thoughtfully planned to give every visitor a sense of space and easy access to the tranquil waterfront areas.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
While the park feels tucked away, it is only a short drive from the historic and charming town of Manteo, where travelers can explore the Elizabethan Gardens and the Roanoke Island Festival Park. For those interested in aviation history, the Wright Brothers National Memorial is just a quick trip up the coast. Beach lovers will appreciate the proximity to the pristine shores of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and the iconic striped silhouette of the Bodie Island Lighthouse.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideally suited for big-rig owners and mature travelers who prefer a sophisticated, quiet environment over a high-activity family campground. It specifically appeals to those who want to experience the authentic Outer Banks from a peaceful vantage point. If you are looking for a scenic, exceptionally well-maintained park that serves as a premium gateway to both regional history and coastal nature, this refuge is the perfect fit for your travel style.

We camped here for 7 days and absolutely loved it! The pricing was great and the area was amazing and beautiful! We thought we were going to be late for check in, so I called the manager and she checked me I the day before, told me the rules and my site number! The refuge is quiet, theres a pool and a little dog park for our fur babies!! We cannot wait to come back here next year!

Beautiful campground and we will definitely be back. The manager is super nice and helpful. She runs a great campground. Clean, spacious sites with full hookup. Beautiful walking areas and places to relax and fish. Bathhouse is a little small but very clean.

Very nice campground with awesome people who run the place. They have a shower room, laundry machines, and a pool right on the canal pond.
