Thompson Creek
Overview
Thompson Creek Provincial Recreation Area offers a rugged and immersive escape for travelers seeking a deep connection with the Canadian Rockies. Situated along the scenic David Thompson Highway, this park provides a quiet alternative to the busier campgrounds within the nearby national park system. It is a destination defined by its serene natural environment and proximity to the North Saskatchewan River. For those who value silence and mountain views over modern conveniences, this location serves as an authentic gateway to the wild landscape of David Thompson Country.
Location & Surroundings
The park is located approximately 85 kilometers west of Nordegg, Alberta, positioning it near the edge of Banff National Park. Surrounded by towering peaks and dense evergreen forests, the setting is visually stunning throughout the year. The sound of the creek rushing nearby adds to the peaceful atmosphere. Travelers will find themselves nestled in a valley that offers quick access to the Icefields Parkway, making it a strategic stop for those navigating the transition between central Alberta and the high mountain passes.
Amenities & Park Features
As a provincial recreation area, the facilities here are focused on providing a primitive camping experience. The park features unserviced sites that accommodate both tents and RVs, though larger rigs should navigate the loops with care. Basic amenities include vault toilets and fire pits at every site, which facilitate a traditional camping vibe. While there is a hand pump for water available, it is essential for visitors to bring their own potable supply or be prepared to treat water, as this is a true dry-camping destination.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find a wealth of activities just minutes away from their campsite. A short drive leads to the trailhead for Siffleur Falls, where hikers can witness powerful cascades and dramatic canyon views. The nearby Abraham Lake is famous for its vibrant blue water and unique ice bubbles in winter. Fishing and photography are popular along the North Saskatchewan River, while the vast trails of the Kootenay Plains Ecological Reserve offer endless opportunities for wildlife spotting and exploring local history.
Who This Park Is Best For
Thompson Creek is ideal for self-contained RVers who enjoy off-grid living and the beauty of a rustic setting. It is the perfect fit for hikers, photographers, and nature lovers who want to explore the mountains without the congestion of major tourist hubs. If you appreciate a starry night sky and the simplicity of a crackling campfire, this park offers a peaceful retreat. It is best suited for those who come prepared with their own power and water, prioritizing direct access to the great outdoors.

Thompson Creek may not be the best campground we stayed at in the area, but it’s definitely worth it if you want to immerse yourself in nature. The campground has limited services and many first-come, first-served sites (we booked in advance since we were traveling with our newborn). It’s set among tall trees and right next to the creek, which makes it very scenic and peaceful. When we visited in August, there were quite a lot of mosquitoes in the evenings, which could be a bit annoying outdoors. The staff was kind and helpful, and the sites were spacious and well maintained.

Absolutely gorgeous. Stayed in a reserve site, did not make it to the unreserved side. Ablutions were clean and adequate. Camp hosts were friendly and helpful. The sites were well treed and huge. Would absolutely go here again.

Quiet campground with clean toilets friendly staff who gave lots of info. Viewpoint takes a steep climb but view was worht it. Good alternative from Banff Jasper campground.

This campground is so much better than those found in the adjacent national parks! Plenty of room in each site, clean facilities and friendly management. Cost is only $28CAD. We ended up here in a Fraser Big C RV after unsuccessfully driving around other campsites in the park. No Reservation and plenty of empty spots

Stayed here last September, the folks taking care of the campground were kind and courteous, let us borrow a splitting axe as we had forgotten ours and it was very well maintained. Some good hikes in the area too.
