Thunder Bay KOA

Overview

The Thunder Bay KOA offers a premier camping experience nestled in the heart of Northwestern Ontario wilderness. Located just minutes east of the city in Shuniah, this park serves as an ideal basecamp for exploring the rugged beauty of the Lake Superior North Shore. With a focus on high-quality service and a well-maintained landscape, it successfully bridges the gap between a rustic outdoor adventure and the modern comforts of a resort-style campground. It is widely recognized as a top-tier destination for those traversing the Trans-Canada Highway.

Location & Surroundings

Situated conveniently along the highway, the park is perfectly positioned for travelers moving through the vast Canadian landscape. The surrounding area is defined by dense boreal forests and the dramatic geological formations of the Canadian Shield. While the highway provides effortless access for large rigs, the park remains sheltered by mature trees, offering a serene and quiet atmosphere. It sits within a short drive of the stunning Lake Superior shoreline, providing a peaceful retreat from the road while keeping Thunder Bay urban amenities within easy reach.

Amenities & Park Features

This facility stands out for its extensive recreation options, including two heated salt-water pools that are a major highlight during the summer months. Families often enjoy the 18-hole mini-golf course, the large playground, and the dedicated bike rentals. For those traveling with pets, the KampK9 off-leash park offers a secure and clean space for dogs to exercise. The sites themselves are designed to accommodate everything from large motorhomes to small camper vans, featuring level gravel pads, full hookups, and reliable high-speed internet.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure seekers will find plenty of outdoor recreation just a short drive from the park entrance. The iconic Sleeping Giant Provincial Park offers world-class hiking with breathtaking views of the lake. History buffs and sightseers can visit the nearby Terry Fox Memorial and Lookout, which honors a national hero while providing a panoramic view of the Sleeping Giant rock formation. Additionally, a short trip to Kakabeka Falls, often called the Niagara of the North, provides a spectacular sight for nature photographers and families alike.

Who This Park Is Best For

This KOA is an excellent choice for family vacationers seeking a resort-style environment with plenty of on-site entertainment to keep children engaged. It is also highly recommended for cross-country travelers who need a reliable, big-rig friendly stopover that does not compromise on cleanliness or convenience. Whether you are staying for a single night while heading across Ontario or using it as a multi-day hub for regional exploration, the park caters to those who value a polished and predictable camping experience.

I had few stayed with KOA campgrounds in Alaska, very good maintenance and running. I trust these three letter. I specifically chose Thunder Bay KOA, even though its price is more expensive than other campgrounds. The site was quite empty . Everything was fine, but only little bit 🤏warm temperatures water was supplied for shower. That’s not standard of KOA. I did not have shower that night. Not more KOA in Canada.

Needed an RV site for the night as we were passing through Thunder Bay. Showers/washrooms were clean and you could see that the park is well maintained. Too many amenities to list and really wish we had more time to relax and enjoy them. Will definitely be staying there on our way back to BC

Thunder Bay KOA Holiday is hands down the best campground we’ve stayed at in the past two years. With over 200 sites, there’s plenty of space, and the entire park is kept in excellent condition thanks to daily maintenance. There’s so much for children to enjoy — swimming pools, jumping pads, and endless activities — and dog owners will love the dedicated dog area, complete with its own little swimming bath. The staff are constantly moving around the park, making sure everything is in perfect order. Facilities are outstanding: the hottest, cleanest showers we’ve had in four months, and plenty of bathrooms and showers located throughout the park. Registration is quick and easy, and the onsite shop is well-stocked, even carrying useful RV and caravan equipment in case you need it. The location is great too — about 8 km from a shopping centre and supermarket, with the Terry Fox Memorial just down the road

My children have all grown up now so I didnt have kids with me. If you've got children this is a fantastic campground. The things for kids to do is excellent. There is no shortage of activities for them. They had 2 fenced dog parks with a dog pool the size of a backyard pond. The staff were great and the washrooms were good as well. Best water pressure I've ever had at a campsite.

Right off the highway, it is so very convenient . This is a great stop if you have kids as there is a splash park, pool, playground, and lots more things to keep them entertained . The showers and bathrooms are extremely clean and have a little area for sitting and doing hair and makeup. I was extremely impressed with the shop staff who are helpful and friendly. At the shop, you can get a few groceries and gifts, I purchased a few pieces of jewelry at a reasonable price. We have camped all across Canada, and I think this KOA offers a lot.
