Thunder Mountain Campground

Overview

Thunder Mountain Campground offers a classic East Tennessee camping experience with a specific focus on the excitement surrounding the Bristol Motor Speedway. While many visitors arrive for high-octane race weekends, the park maintains a wooded and rustic atmosphere that appeals to those looking for a simple escape. The property provides a functional balance between convenience for major regional events and the natural beauty of the Appalachian foothills.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just off the main highway in Bristol, the park is tucked into a hillside that offers a sense of privacy despite its proximity to major local attractions. The surrounding landscape features mature trees and rolling hills, providing plenty of shade during the humid Tennessee summers. Its location makes it a prime spot for travelers who want to remain close to the Twin Cities area while enjoying a quiet evening away from the city lights.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground is thoughtfully designed to accommodate various camping styles, ranging from full hookup RV sites to primitive tent areas. RVers will find essential utilities including 30 and 50-amp electrical service, water, and sewer connections on level gravel pads that can handle various rig sizes. On-site facilities include:

  • A functional bathhouse with hot showers and restrooms.
  • A pet-friendly environment for traveling companions.
  • Spacious sites nestled under a canopy of mature trees.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The most notable neighbor is the Bristol Motor Speedway, which is within walking distance for the active traveler or a very short drive during event weekends. Beyond the race track, the region is a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts, with the South Holston Lake nearby for world-class trout fishing and boating. Visitors can also explore the historic charm of downtown Bristol, officially recognized as the Birthplace of Country Music, or take a subterranean tour of the impressive and ancient Bristol Caverns.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal choice for NASCAR enthusiasts who want a reliable and comfortable home base during race weeks without the intensity of infield camping. It also suits road-trippers and explorers looking for a straightforward, no-frills stay while discovering the scenic beauty and musical heritage of Sullivan County. If you prefer a natural, shaded setting with essential amenities over a high-priced luxury resort, Thunder Mountain provides the perfect environment for your East Tennessee visit.

The camp ground is a muddy mess they need to do something about it and keep it up just because that is the only place some people have to live does not mean they should have to live in a muddy mess that is why I gave it one star because it is always like that not to mention the big holes.

An RV park that prefers long term rentals! Located close to the Bristol raceway and many other services!

The location and price are good, bath houes were clean, that is about where it ends. I would go back for convince and price but would not be my first choice. Be aware they will only check people in 8 am to 6:30 pm, we had to stay the night at a store since we would be later than 6:30. There is nothing to let you know about check in time unless or until you ask. They have lots of full timers and many are covered with tarps and in rough shape. Sites are full hookups ours was a mix of 2 to 3" gravel, mud and knee high grass. The rocks were a challenge to walk on. Good signage and instructions are lacking. With some changes it could be a really nice place.

Thunder Mountain Campground has been the home of the “Bristol Mafia” for 6 years! Words will never express how much we love and appreciate Clay and the entire crew! They go above and beyond making us feel welcome, driving us to and from wherever we need to go and always checking on us if we need anything at all. They honestly make our “home away from home” so awesome that we don’t want to go home! If you are looking for a very welcoming campground- look no further!
