Tillamook State Forest/Gales Creek Campground
Overview
Tucked away in the eastern edge of the Tillamook State Forest, Gales Creek Campground offers a serene, primitive escape for those looking to disconnect. Managed by the Oregon Department of Forestry, this campground serves as a gateway to the rugged beauty of the northern Coast Range. It is a place where the sound of the wind through the Douglas firs and the rushing water of the creek replace the hum of city life, providing a true nature-focused retreat for forest travelers.
Location & Surroundings
Situated off Highway 6 in Gales Creek, Oregon, the park is nestled within a lush, temperate rainforest environment. The landscape is characterized by towering evergreens and dense ferns, providing a deep sense of privacy between sites. The campground’s proximity to the Gales Creek Trailhead makes it a primary hub for those wishing to explore the expansive trail systems that wind through the surrounding mountains and canyons of the Coast Range.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic, dry camping facility, meaning there are no electrical, sewer, or water hookups available for RVs. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and fire ring, and potable water is accessible via shared hand pumps throughout the campground. Vault toilets are maintained for guest convenience. While the interior roads are paved, many sites are better suited for smaller rigs, camper vans, or rooftop tents due to the dense forest canopy and natural terrain.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless opportunities for adventure, starting with the Gales Creek Trail, which connects to a massive network of hiking and mountain biking paths like the Gravelle Brothers Trail. A short drive away, the Tillamook Forest Center offers interactive exhibits about the region's history and ecology. For those willing to travel further west, the stunning Oregon Coast and its famous dairy farms are reachable within an hour, making this a great base for coastal day trips.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for self-contained RVers who appreciate a quiet, off-grid experience over resort-style luxuries. It is a favorite for avid hikers and mountain bikers who want direct trail access from their campsite. If you prefer the smell of a campfire and the shade of ancient trees over high-speed internet and full utility connections, this tranquil forest setting in the heart of the Oregon mountains is the perfect match for your travel style.

Excellent hiking for pups and healthy humans, but be careful; the trails are steep, narrow, and washed out in places.

A campground with access to trails and Gales Creek. Each campsite had a table and fire ring. A clean pit toilet restroom is available. A manual water pump is available behind the self registration area. There was a camp host both times we visited. Campsites are first come first served. Gales Creek Day Use Trailhead is across the creek. It has several picnic sites with tables. Two fire rings and a clean pit toilet restroom are available. Parking is free in two gravel lots. The Gales Creek Trail is mostly uphill to the Summit Trailhead. It is about 2.5 miles. Parts of the trail are overgrown, but still easy to follow. A large tree is blocking the trail in one location. A challenging climb around is available. The trail is steep in places. The surface is dirt or gravel. There are several sturdy bridges.

I love this place. I went every year as a kid with my parents. There are restrooms, tables, hiking trails, a river, and more! I hope to go with my friends some time in the future.

Gales Creek is our favorite campground, the place is beautiful, relaxing and well maintained, the host Chuck is the best! Our radio run out of battery and Chuck gave us the AA battery we need, thank you so much. My husband and I will be back soon.

We drove here to check it out for the summer. No hook ups, but big spacious sites. Great hiking opportunities.
