Tionesta Lake - COE/Tionesta Rec Area Campground
Overview
Tionesta Lake - COE/Tionesta Rec Area Campground offers a serene getaway managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Located at the base of the Tionesta Dam, this facility provides a rustic yet comfortable base for exploring the Pennsylvania wilds and the 3,000-acre lake itself. The park is characterized by its mature hardwood canopy and a slower pace of life that appeals to those looking to disconnect. Unlike crowded commercial resorts, this campground emphasizes the natural environment, providing a quiet atmosphere where the sounds of the nearby creek and forest take center stage.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the heart of Forest County, Pennsylvania, the campground is positioned at the southern gateway to the Allegheny National Forest. The landscape is defined by the impressive engineering of the dam and the rugged hillsides that frame the water. Its proximity to the confluence of Tionesta Creek and the Allegheny River makes it a prime location for water-based recreation. The surrounding valley is deeply wooded, providing a sense of seclusion and excellent opportunities for stargazing away from the light pollution of major metropolitan areas.
Amenities & Park Features
Visitors can choose from various campsites, many of which feature 30 or 50-amp electric hookups to accommodate modern RVs and travel trailers. While the setting is natural, guests have access to essential conveniences including a centrally located dump station, potable water hydrants, and modern shower facilities with flush toilets. The park also features a multi-lane boat launch and several well-maintained playgrounds for families. Each site typically includes a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring, encouraging the classic outdoor camping experience under the shade of towering trees.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities, from fishing for trophy musky and walleye in the lake to exploring the scenic Tionesta Lake Trail. A unique local highlight is the Sherman Memorial Lighthouse, which stands as a surprising landmark in the nearby town of Tionesta. For a more immersive wilderness experience, the nearby Allegheny National Forest offers hundreds of miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking. Boaters can enjoy the calm waters of the lake, while those with kayaks can explore the winding path of the Tionesta Creek below the dam.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for nature-focused families and anglers who prioritize proximity to the water and forest over resort-style luxuries. It is a fantastic choice for budget-conscious RVers who appreciate the spacious, level, and shaded sites typical of Corps of Engineers parks. Because it can accommodate larger rigs while remaining relatively quiet, it is a favorite for retirees and couples seeking a peaceful retreat. If your travel style involves campfire cooking, morning birdwatching, and a genuine connection with the outdoors, this recreation area is a perfect fit.

Awesome campground, plenty of space, got a primative site right next to bathrooms, warm private showers in a huge warm bathroom. Quick walk to the outflow and creekside trail. Always came to visit growing up but our first time camping here, definitely would like to come back in the future! Prices for camping isnt too expensive at all, lots to explore within campground and town.

Good spacing, level sites. Seems like all sites are full hookup. Mostly shaded sites but a few with sun. Several bathrooms, they are functional but older and showing their age. Several sites along the river. Sites near the outflow have white noise. Grounds are well kept. Friendly volunteers and staff.

Our favorite campground hands down! It's a nice place to ride bikes, hike, boat, or swim in the lake. We make several trips to this campground each season. They have full hookups, bathhouse, playground, & paved roads. Sites are gravel with picnic tables and fire rings. Cross over the dam and enjoy a day on the lake fishing, boating, swimming, skiing, or tubing.

Very beautiful campground. Right along the Tionesta Creek. Some sites are along the creek, others are only a few yards away. Some sites are more secluded while others are great if you’re traveling with a group to camp together. Does not have great cell service but that helps you disconnect from the world and spend time talking and playing games. Some bathhouses are better than others. We’ll definitely stay here again.

We stayed here while attending The Ten Miles 4 Two Mile (TM4TM) at Two Mile Run County Park July 13 and 14 2024 Did not really explore the campground... but it was quiet, and our site (19) was clean and roomy.... easy to back in and flat...
