Tongue River Reservoir
Overview
Tongue River Reservoir State Park offers a refreshing blue oasis set against the rugged, high plains landscape of southeastern Montana. Stretching twelve miles across, this reservoir is a premier destination for those seeking water-based recreation in a peaceful, remote setting. The park is renowned for its exceptional fishing opportunities and expansive views of the red shale bluffs that line the water. Whether you are passing through on a cross-country journey or planning a week-long fishing expedition, the park provides a scenic backdrop for a quiet outdoor escape.
Location & Surroundings
Located in Decker, MT, just north of the Wyoming border, the park is surrounded by stark prairie landscapes and juniper-dotted hills. The isolation of this region ensures that visitors experience incredible dark skies at night and a true sense of solitude during the day. The reservoir itself is the primary draw, carving a deep blue path through the dry, rolling terrain. RVers will find the drive into the park manageable, though the wide-open spaces and minimal local traffic highlight the area's rural character.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features several camping loops tailored for different needs, including the popular Campers Point. Travelers will find electric hookups at many sites, accommodating larger rigs with 50-amp service. While the park maintains a rustic charm, essential facilities such as vault toilets and fish cleaning stations are available for convenience. For boaters, the park provides multiple boat ramps and a dump station, making it easy to manage your rig and enjoy the water in one place.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary activity here is undoubtedly on the water. Anglers frequent the reservoir for its state-record-sized fish, specifically walleye, crappie, and northern pike. Beyond the water, history buffs can explore the nearby Rosebud Battlefield State Park, which offers insight into the region's complex tribal and military past. Bird watching is also a favorite pastime, as the reservoir attracts various migratory species. The vast acreage provides ample room for hiking along the shorelines or simply enjoying the tranquil vistas.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize natural beauty and outdoor activity over resort-style amenities. It is a haven for fishing enthusiasts and boaters who want direct access to the water without the crowds often found at more commercial lakes. Families looking for a quiet place to swim and stargaze will find the environment welcoming. If you value scenic solitude and the freedom of the Montana high plains, this park fits your travel style perfectly.

Beautiful lake. Great place . Electric hookup. They do have a dump site, but no fresh water that we could see.

Camp here on November 17th. 2023. No one is here. Temperatures are still holding in the upper 50's. Sites 1 through 11 have 50 amp service there is no water dump station is still open all year. Veterans can camp for $13 a night. This has been very enjoyable. Definitely will come back again.

Only spent a night on a stop over. Beautiful spot. Most sites are easy water access. Looked like a great place to fish. Sites are quite spread out. Really good stocked store at the campground. Awesome place. Hope to make it back someday.
