Tonto/Indian Point Campground

RV Park

Overview

Overview

Tonto/Indian Point Campground, situated along the expansive shoreline of Roosevelt Lake, offers a quintessential desert escape for those who appreciate rugged, natural landscapes. This site is managed by the Tonto National Forest, providing an authentic camping experience that favors natural beauty over manicured resort luxury. It serves as a scenic destination for travelers looking to disconnect and enjoy the expansive desert sky and the cooling waters of the reservoir.

Location & Surroundings

Located in the heart of Arizona, the campground provides convenient access to the Salt River and Roosevelt Lake. The terrain is defined by dramatic desert vistas and the surrounding Mazatzal and Sierra Ancha mountains. RVers will appreciate the remote, quiet atmosphere that keeps visitors surrounded by the desert ecosystem. The drive itself provides beautiful views of the Tonto National Forest, making the journey to this destination part of the overall adventure.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground offers essential facilities designed to support a self-sufficient camping style. Guests will find gravel pads suitable for various RV sizes, though it is best to check specific site lengths prior to arrival. While individual sites are generally primitive, the area features access to vault toilets and trash collection points. Most sites are positioned to provide excellent views of the lake, ensuring that your living space feels connected to the water and the open desert.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Roosevelt Lake is the primary attraction, drawing visitors for boating, fishing, and swimming throughout the warmer months. For those interested in regional history and architecture, the Tonto National Monument is a short drive away, featuring well-preserved cliff dwellings. The surrounding forest roads also invite exploration for those interested in off-highway vehicle adventures or scenic hiking trails. The area is a sanctuary for birdwatchers and photography enthusiasts looking for unique desert wildlife and flora.

Who This Park Is Best For

Tonto/Indian Point Campground is ideal for self-contained RVers who prefer a rustic wilderness experience over commercial amenities. It is a fantastic match for anglers, water sports enthusiasts, and nature photographers who prioritize accessibility to the water. Because it lacks high-end resort features like full hookups, it is best suited for those comfortable with boondocking or limited utility stays. It offers a peaceful, scenic retreat for travelers seeking to experience the authentic Arizona backcountry.

The campground itself is beautiful, off the beaten path and not maintained really well. Absolutely recommend! However.... We were 3 guys on a motorcycle camping trip and checked the USDA website to make sure the campground was open with access to the "facilities", which were open according to the website. we understood there is no running water. When we arrived the "facilities" were locked and remained locked. So glad we came prepared with necessities. If you are tent camping, bring your own toilet!

It’s a Dispersed Campground, so no frills except that there is a boat ramp. Plenty of parking for boaters. There is two campsites. One is an open area with small rock fire rings that can accommodate all sorts of campers and more if you’re really friendly. The other is the remains of 40 or so numbered campsites. It is structured like a maintained campground but it’s not maintained. Either site will handle any size rig.

Lacking in space for larger rigs but good campsites from the forest service
