Tonto/Tortilla

RV Park

Overview

Overview

Tonto/Tortilla Flat, located near the base of the Superstition Mountains, offers a unique desert camping experience for travelers seeking to escape the bustle of city life. This area is characterized by its rugged terrain and historical charm, providing a distinct atmosphere that feels worlds away from the modern developments of Apache Junction. Visitors will find that the natural scenery is the primary draw, making it a perfect spot for those who appreciate the raw, untouched beauty of the Arizona desert.

Location & Surroundings

Situated along the scenic Apache Trail, the park serves as a gateway to some of the most dramatic landscapes in the state. The location is nestled within the Tonto National Forest, which means guests are surrounded by towering saguaros and breathtaking mountain vistas. The winding road leading to the site offers stunning panoramic views, though drivers should be prepared for the narrow, steep sections that define this historic and iconic desert passage.

Amenities & Park Features

The site maintains a focus on simplicity, catering to those who want a true outdoor experience rather than a luxury resort feel. Facilities are basic but functional, providing essential camping accommodations that allow guests to maximize their time in the wild. While the amenities are limited compared to urban RV parks, the secluded campsites provide the necessary space to enjoy quiet evenings under the vast, star-filled Arizona sky, away from light pollution and city noise.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure seekers will find plenty of opportunities for exploration in the immediate vicinity. The nearby Canyon Lake offers scenic boat tours and fishing spots, providing a cooling respite from the desert heat. Additionally, the historic Tortilla Flat stagecoach stop remains a popular destination for travelers looking to grab a meal or visit the local gift shop. Many visitors also take advantage of the diverse hiking trails that weave through the mountainous landscape, offering challenges for all skill levels.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-contained RVers who prefer a rustic, wilderness-oriented trip over high-end resort amenities. It is especially well-suited for nature photographers and hikers who want direct access to the backcountry of the Tonto National Forest. If you value serenity and proximity to historical landmarks above modern conveniences like paved pads or extensive recreation centers, this location will likely serve as a highlight of your Arizona road trip experience.

Beautiful little CG! Restaurant right nearby at tortilla flat. Why fight for a spot at Lost Dutchman when you can just come here! (However, as of December 4th 2025, the campground is temporarily closed for water pipe repair)

Beautiful drive to get to the flats, and a great place to eat and do a little shopping. We continued on all the way to the Roosevelt Dam.

This is a campground. Most of the sites are closed on the top level. There’s a few available in the lower level. We had a hard time maneuvering our 30 foot trailer into the spot. It was a really tight turn. Sites are water and sewer. No electricity.
