Trap Pond

Overview

Trap Pond State Park in Laurel, Delaware, offers a unique camping experience centered around the northernmost natural stand of bald cypress trees in North America. Originally developed in the late 18th century to power a saw mill, this historic site has transformed into a premier destination for RVers seeking a tranquil connection with nature. The park spans over 3,000 acres, providing a lush, green canopy that feels worlds away from the busy Atlantic coastline. It is a place where the stillness of the water and the prehistoric look of the cypress knees create a serene atmosphere for every visitor.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the heart of Sussex County, the park is nestled within a rural landscape characterized by farm fields and loblolly pine forests. The town of Laurel, DE provides a charming backdrop with small-town hospitality and convenient access to grocery stores and local supplies. Unlike the bustling Delaware beaches to the east, the surroundings here are quiet and undisturbed. The park acts as a natural sanctuary, allowing the sounds of the wetlands and woodlands to take center stage, making it an ideal escape from urban noise.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features over 140 sites with essential features for a comfortable stay. The park provides various facilities to ensure a smooth RVing experience:

  • Water and electric hookups with 30-amp and 50-amp options
  • Centrally located climate-controlled bathhouses with hot showers
  • The Baldcypress Nature Center featuring educational exhibits
  • On-site boat rentals and a concrete boat ramp

Travelers will also find a dump station and firewood sales on-site. The spacious campsites are mostly shaded, providing relief during the warmer summer months while maintaining a sense of privacy between neighbors.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can spend hours on the Bob Trail, a 4.6-mile loop that circles the pond and is perfect for hiking or biking. Paddling through the cypress swamp is a must-do activity, as the water trails lead directly through the hauntingly beautiful trees. Consider exploring these local highlights:

  • Paddling through the Terrapin Branch water trail
  • Visiting the historic Phillips Landing for Nanticoke River access
  • Birdwatching for pileated woodpeckers and prothonotary warblers

While the park feels secluded, the coastal attractions and boardwalks of Rehoboth Beach are approximately 45 minutes away for those wanting a day trip to the Atlantic Ocean.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is perfect for nature photographers and birdwatchers who want to capture the unique flora and fauna of a freshwater wetland. It is ideal for families and couples who prefer a rustic, quiet atmosphere over a resort-style commercial park. If you enjoy paddling and woodland hiking, Trap Pond State Park serves as an excellent home base for an immersive outdoor adventure in Southern Delaware. It is best suited for those who appreciate natural beauty and a slower pace of life during their RV travels.

Another adventure here. We took the afternoon pontoon tour of the swamp cedar forest. Diane was a wonderful guide with her historical and nature information. Leaves are not fully dressed in their Autumn display yet. Still we had a fun time.

Very nice campground with large site's. Easy to get in 4.5 miles off or rt 13. I wish the sites were a little more level then they are, but I've seen worse. The restrooms were decent with hot showers. The pond is large great for kayaking. Great hiking and Frisbee golf course. The dump stations were clean with plenty of room. I recommend camping here.

This campground has a nice camp office/store. Roads in the campground aren’t paved - gravel. Restrooms are pretty well kept and are cleaned every day. A nice playground and pavilion with picnic tables are provided and are very clean. Campsites are large and come with electricity and water. Extra bonus of super cute and friendly squirrels that try to steal your food 🥰
