Trough Creek

Overview

Trough Creek State Park offers a scenic retreat tucked away in a narrow gorge carved by Great Trough Creek. This state park is renowned for its unique geological formations and rugged beauty. Unlike massive commercial resorts, this destination focuses on the tranquility of the Pennsylvania wilderness, providing a quiet base for those who enjoy hiking and natural history. The park serves as a serene sanctuary for travelers looking to experience the heart of the state’s natural landscapes.

Location & Surroundings

Located in James Creek, PA, the park sits just east of the expansive Raystown Lake. The landscape is characterized by steep slopes, rocky outcrops, and dense forest canopies that provide ample shade and privacy. The sound of rushing water from the creek provides a constant backdrop to your stay, while the scenic gorge creates a feeling of isolation and peace, even though local services in Huntingdon County are just a short drive away.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground is relatively small and rustic, catering to those who prefer a traditional outdoor experience. It features 29 sites, some of which offer electric hookups for smaller RVs and trailers. On-site facilities include a sanitary dump station and modern restrooms with showers. While there are no full hookups available, the well-maintained gravel pads and surrounding mature trees ensure a comfortable, shaded environment for your stay during the camping season.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore, including the famous Balanced Rock and the historic Copperas Rock. A must-see feature is the Rainbow Bridge, a suspension bridge that crosses the creek and provides access to several miles of trails. Hikers can enjoy over 12 miles of paths ranging from easy to difficult, while those looking for water recreation can head to nearby Raystown Lake for boating and fishing opportunities just a few minutes from the park entrance.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature lovers and hikers who prioritize scenic views and outdoor exploration over luxury resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for travelers with smaller RVs or camper vans who want to disconnect from digital distractions and immerse themselves in the outdoors. If you appreciate historic sites and unique geological features, this quiet corner of James Creek will be a highlight of your Pennsylvania travels.

Trough Creek is a favorite campground of my wife and I. It's very peaceful and quiet. The surrounding areas offer beautiful scenery and a great place to just enjoy the outdoors. If you like to boat, or fish , or just enjoy the water Raystown lake is just minutes away. The only negative is that there is no shower facilities and Trough Creek otherwise I would rate it a 5.

Such a pretty park. Lots of camping and picnic areas. Limited bathrooms at the park. Seen the suspension bridge, Ravens rocks, rainbow falls, and the big rock. Some of wood is missing and you gotta step over it on the suspension bridge. Rainbow falls were barely flowing from the drought we are in. Steep steps and trails at the park along the rainbow falls. Trash cans along paths . Some of the stone steps were lose as you stood on them along rainbow falls. Ravens trail markings disappeared after getting to Ravens rocks. Lots to see at the park. Spent about 3 hours at the park walking most of the trails. Had no cell service at the park. Limited parking for handicap parking. There is parking near the trails. Ice mine only gets ice in the winter. Creek

A great place to hike! The hike to the balance rock features the suspension bridge and waterfalls. Nearby there are some old foundations to explore and the ice mine is like stepping into AC on a hot day!

Just a beautiful, clean , quaint state park. Peaceful and nicely wooded. Its a hidden gem and I will visit again. We did lots of hiking right there from the campground.

I went here during a school field trip, after our field trip to the Altoona curve got canceled.😪 I was expecting a boring field trip, but to my surprise it was actually pretty fun!😄 We went to a waterfall which was pretty cool! 😎 We to a mountain peak. ⛰️ We also went to the ice mine, BTW it was pretty cold down there. 🧊 ⛏️
