Tuck In the Wood Campground

Overview

Tuck In the Wood Campground offers a serene escape on St. Helena Island, characterized by its deeply wooded setting and peaceful atmosphere. Unlike the bustling resorts found in more developed coastal areas, this park emphasizes a return to nature and quiet relaxation. It provides a comfortable home base for travelers exploring the South Carolina Lowcountry, offering a mix of spacious RV sites and primitive camping areas shaded by a thick canopy of ancient oaks and towering pines.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the heart of the South Carolina Lowcountry, the campground is located on a quiet rural road, well away from the noise of major highways. The surrounding landscape is defined by sprawling salt marshes, maritime forests, and the rich Gullah culture of St. Helena Island. It serves as an ideal gateway for those wishing to visit the nearby historic city of Beaufort, which is located just a short drive across marsh-lined bridges and tidal creeks.

Amenities & Park Features

The park caters to modern travelers with full hookup sites that include water, sewer, and 30/50-amp electricity options. Visitors have access to essential facilities including a clean bathhouse, on-site laundry, and a dump station for convenience. For recreation, the property features a scenic fishing pond and several miles of nature trails that wind through the forest. The sites are carefully placed to provide a level of privacy and natural beauty often missing in standard commercial parks.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

A major highlight for any guest is the proximity to Hunting Island State Park, where visitors can enjoy miles of pristine beaches and climb the famous historic lighthouse. History enthusiasts should also visit the Penn Center, a National Historic Landmark District dedicated to preserving Gullah-Geechee heritage. Additionally, the scenic waterfront and boutique shops in downtown Beaufort offer a perfect afternoon excursion for those wanting to experience classic Southern hospitality and architecture.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is perfect for nature enthusiasts and RVers who prefer a quiet, rustic environment over a high-density resort experience. It is an excellent choice for couples seeking a peaceful retreat or families who enjoy simple outdoor activities like hiking and birdwatching. If your travel style favors seclusion and natural beauty while remaining within reach of the Atlantic coast, this park provides the ideal balance for your South Carolina adventure.

This is a great little place to stop in or live. Peaceful. Hot showers, clean restrooms. So much potential. But then everyone would be there. Travel pattern and numbering system is hard to follow. Solar lights on the trees by the road line would be helpful. Lighted Path to bathhouse would also be helpful. Love visiting. Easy drive to other locations.. st edwards Island Park and Beaufort. Historic sites to visit in the area

I solo tent camped here for one night in September. As the website mentioned reservations were not needed, I arrived at the campground around 6pm and was able to use the phone inside the office to call someone to come down and register for a site. I paid $35 for a tent site for one night. The registration process was quick and easy, and the site was spacious and clean. It does seem like most campers at this campground live there full-time, but it seemed pretty empty and there were lots of tent sites available. The bathrooms were clean and as a solo female traveller, I felt safe and comfortable the whole time.

My favorite campground of all time! Great prices, clean and hot showers, great sites. Close to fort freeman and hunting island. I brought my son and several of his friends here every year before school started for 4 years straight. We loved it! In the summer you can smell the tomato field down the road. Love the boardwalk through the swamp! Great for early morning walks. Always feel safe at this one.
