Tuolumne Meadows Campground
Overview
Tuolumne Meadows Campground offers a quintessential high-country experience within the heart of Yosemite National Park. Positioned at an elevation of 8,600 feet, this seasonal destination provides a cool, serene escape from the lower valley heat. While this remains a rustic campground, it serves as a premier basecamp for those wishing to explore the subalpine meadows and granite peaks that define the eastern portion of the park. It is truly a place for nature enthusiasts seeking tranquility.
Location & Surroundings
Situated along Tioga Road, the campground is strategically located to access the quieter, more rugged sections of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The surrounding landscape features vast subalpine meadows, winding rivers, and towering granite domes. Visitors find themselves surrounded by dense pine forests that offer a distinct sense of wilderness isolation. The high-altitude environment creates a breathtaking backdrop, making it an ideal setting for those who value deep immersion in nature over resort-style convenience.
Amenities & Park Features
Because the campground focuses on a back-to-basics experience, amenities are intentionally limited to preserve the natural surroundings. Guests will find potable water stations, flush toilets, and fire rings provided at each site. There are no electrical hookups, sewer connections, or showers available on-site, requiring campers to be fully self-contained. The sites are spacious enough to accommodate smaller RVs and trailers, though travelers should confirm size restrictions before planning their journey to this high-country destination.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The area is a paradise for hikers and photographers, with numerous trailheads access located within a short drive or walk. You can easily reach the famous Lembert Dome, which offers panoramic views of the entire meadow system below. Other popular excursions include Cathedral Lakes and the serene Dana Meadows. Fishing, wildlife viewing, and stargazing are the primary activities here, as the lack of light pollution provides some of the clearest night sky vistas found anywhere in California.
Who This Park Is Best For
Tuolumne Meadows Campground is perfect for the experienced RVer who prioritizes location and wilderness access over modern luxury. If your travel style centers on disconnecting from technology to spend your days trekking through the backcountry, this site will feel like home. It is best suited for those driving smaller RVs or camper vans who are well-prepared for dry camping and want to wake up surrounded by the beauty of the high Sierra.

I was excited to stay at Tuolumne Meadows Campground after an extensive renovation. It's beautiful spot and well placed to visit many of my favorite spots. I live in Phoenix, so getting into that mountain environment after a long, hot summer was so refreshing. My only complaint was the placement of the bathrooms. The bathrooms were like a quarter mile from my campsite.

Rangers were very nice and helpful. Location is outstanding. Creek running through is gorgeous. 65% of bathrooms are really nice. No showers, but that’s ok. Camp sites vary in size- definitely not all equal; also fine but fyi. Had a great stay.

Beautiful campground with access to the best part of Yosemite and the high country! The campsites were great, the washrooms were so clean and had flush toilets, no showers. We had a really noisy neighbor made noise the whole night until 12am and got really frustrating. The second night we had a lovely cold couple who were really respectful and quiet. Would love to camp here again! Absolutely well maintained spots and so close to some of the best trails

Newly renovated after a 3-years closure. All sites have new fire pits, tables and benches, and what seems like slightly larger bear boxes. The restrooms are also renovated but don't have any new features.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ if they had showers. Sites are decent and the campground is quiet. Restrooms with flush toilets were clean. Each area has a water spigot. 👍🏼👍🏼
