Tuttle Creek/Fancy Creek
Overview
Tuttle Creek State Park's Fancy Creek Area offers a peaceful escape within the rugged beauty of the Kansas Flint Hills. Located on the northern shores of the reservoir, this unit provides a quieter alternative to the more bustling areas closer to the dam. Visitors are greeted by scenic limestone bluffs and expansive water views that define this region. It is a destination where nature takes center stage, offering a rustic yet comfortable environment for those who want to experience the outdoors without the crowds.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just north of Manhattan, KS, the Fancy Creek Area is tucked away near the town of Randolph. The landscape is characterized by rolling prairie hills and dense woodlands that overlook the 12,500-acre Tuttle Creek Lake. Because it is positioned further upstream, the environment feels more secluded and wild than other park units. The surrounding terrain provides a perfect backdrop for observing local wildlife, including bald eagles and white-tailed deer, making it a serene natural sanctuary for travelers.
Amenities & Park Features
While more rustic than its southern counterparts, Fancy Creek provides essential comforts for RVers. Park features include:
- Campgrounds offering electric and water hookups for various rig sizes.
- A multi-use boat ramp providing deep-water access to the northern reservoir.
- A modern shower house and conveniently located vault toilets.
The area is also home to a renowned shooting range and extensive trail systems that wind through the native timber and limestone outcrops.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for many visitors is the outdoor recreation available right at your doorstep. Highlights include:
- The Fancy Creek Mountain Bike Trail, known for its technical elevation changes.
- Excellent fishing opportunities for crappie and channel catfish in the lake.
- Proximity to Manhattan for visits to the Flint Hills Discovery Center.
Hikers can also visit the nearby Konza Prairie to experience the vast tallgrass prairie ecosystem that once covered the central United States.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for active outdoor enthusiasts and mountain bikers who crave a technical challenge and a quiet place to camp afterward. It is perfectly suited for RVers who prefer a primitive, natural vibe over a highly manicured resort experience. Families who enjoy fishing and birdwatching will find the slower pace refreshing. If you are looking for a basecamp that emphasizes solitude and direct access to rugged Kansas landscapes, Fancy Creek is a stellar choice for your next road trip.

Hidden Hollow is Hidden! Great shade, very quiet, lots of hiking, lots of wildlife (owls everywhere), a hidden gem. Electric sites almost all need some leveling. New water spigots at each bathroom. New shower house that is nice but needs floor leveled for proper draining.

I came here to run trails while at fort Riley. Trails are decent, but not very extensive. Would be fun on a bike too. Lots of spiderwebs and short distance trails were the worst thing, but overall pretty good, especially for Kansas.

Enjoyed hiking the big loop, although we didn't originally plan to do the whole thing. Trail could be marked a little better, but follow the white pipes with purple spray paint when in doubt. Two adults at a mostly leisurely pace, took about 3.5 hours to complete. Most of the trail is shady, though there are pockets of sun. The trail has some very uneven stretches with rocks and tree roots.
