Uinta/Mill Hollow
Overview
Mill Hollow Campground offers a refreshing high-altitude escape within the vast Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Located at an elevation of approximately 8,800 feet, this destination provides a cooler alternative to the valley heat during the summer months. Visitors are greeted by a dense forest of lodgepole pine and subalpine fir, creating a secluded atmosphere that feels miles away from civilization. It is a quintessential mountain retreat for those who appreciate the natural beauty of the Utah highlands.
Location & Surroundings
Situated near the small community of Woodland, UT, the park is accessible via the scenic Highway 35. The surroundings are characterized by rugged mountain terrain and the shimmering waters of the Mill Hollow Reservoir, which sits adjacent to the camping area. The high-elevation environment means travelers should prepare for crisp mountain air and the potential for evening temperature drops, even in mid-summer. The area is a haven for local wildlife, including deer, elk, and various mountain bird species.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional Forest Service site, the focus here is on a rustic experience rather than modern luxuries. The park features well-spaced sites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings to facilitate classic campfire evenings. While there are no electric or water hookups, the facility provides potable water and vault toilets for guest use. The sites are primarily back-in, accommodating a variety of smaller RVs and trailers, making it a favorite for those who enjoy self-contained dry camping in a pristine environment.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the Mill Hollow Reservoir, a popular spot for trout fishing and non-motorized boating. Visitors often enjoy the following activities:
- Fishing for rainbow and brook trout from the shore or a small boat.
- Exploring the Mill Hollow Lakeshore Trail on foot.
- Photography and wildlife viewing throughout the forest.
Additionally, the surrounding Uinta Mountains provide endless opportunities for off-road exploration and scenic drives along the many forest service roads that branch out from the main highway.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for off-grid enthusiasts and RVers who prefer the sounds of nature over the hum of a crowded resort. It is a perfect fit for travelers with smaller rigs, camper vans, or rooftop tents who are looking for a basecamp to explore the Uinta range. Families who enjoy fishing and traditional camping traditions will find the quiet nights and star-filled skies particularly rewarding. If you value seclusion and mountain scenery, this forest gem is well worth the drive.

Mill Hollow campground will forever be our favorite place to camp. Jeff the host is so welcoming and helpful, very friendly! I loved how they drove around to check on everything. That is their job, and they love being the camp host. We will definitely return! Thanks Jeff for all you do to make Mill Hollow shine!

The place is beautiful BUT we didn’t feel welcomed at all. The ranger was hostile and rude immediately upon approaching us. Almost felt like a child being scolded and walking on eggshells, yikes!!! Would love to go back when and if, they get new hosts that are a little more people friendly. Place is clean and pretty though!

Our family had an amazing time at the Millholliow Campground, the camp host Jeff was beyond friendly and so attentive, the bathrooms were cleaned every hour and smelled fresh, and my husbands truck ended up with a broken coolant hose and he went above and beyond to help him tape it so we could make it home! Thank you Jeff for making our Father’s Day weekend and unforgettable trip!!! We will be back!

FLIES!!! There are so many flies out there. Just be aware that until the sun goes down, you will be swarmed. Also, you will be swarmed by the camp director. He is EVERYWHERE and will not leave you alone to enjoy yourself. He is always looking to find some rule that you are breaking. Nice scenery, so-so fishing and a clean restroom.

We went in late July, there was a herd of sheep that were in the area earlier in the week, and I think that's what made the flies so bad. We walked in, excited for a lovely weekend away. What we got was so many flies that I kept looking around for dead wildlife that could be the culprit, but no, not as far as I could find anyway. I love camping, so I made as much of it as I could until I fell into the lake and lost all my fishing equipment. That was a bit rough, and with people's dogs getting away to explore the area and introducing themselves to us, it was a camping trip remember. Would recommend 4/5
