Overview

Box Elder Campground offers a serene and refreshing escape within the expansive Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. This destination provides a lush, forested environment where campers can truly reconnect with nature amidst a dense canopy of maple and box elder trees. It serves as a peaceful, shaded gateway for those exploring the rugged beauty of Northern Utah, offering a cool mountain respite during the warmer summer months while providing a sense of seclusion and tranquility.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just outside the small mountain town of Mantua, Utah, the campground is positioned at an elevation of approximately 5,200 feet. The site is uniquely tucked into the mouth of Box Elder Canyon, providing dramatic views of the surrounding limestone peaks and rocky ridges. Its proximity to the shimmering, blue waters of Mantua Reservoir makes it a prime spot for travelers who enjoy waterfront scenery combined with the crisp, clean air of the Wasatch Mountains.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional National Forest Service site, the park features paved parking spurs that can accommodate a variety of RV sizes, though visitors should note that no utility hookups are provided. Guests have access to essential facilities including vault toilets and seasonal drinking water spigots throughout the loops. Each individual site is thoughtfully equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring, encouraging classic evening campfires under a protective forest canopy that offers significant privacy between neighboring sites.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors, with the popular Mantua Reservoir located just minutes away for premier trout fishing, motorized boating, and swimming. Hikers and mountain bikers can explore the numerous trails winding through the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, which offer varying difficulty levels and spectacular canyon vistas. For a change of pace, the historic charm, local fruit stands, and supply shops of Brigham City are only a short, scenic drive down the canyon road.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for self-contained RVers and nature enthusiasts who prioritize natural scenery and quiet solitude over modern resort-style luxuries. This is a very nice group site (Site A) with lots of shade and water access in the campground. Bathrooms were a little further away but they do have flushers and running water. The dirt road leading into the camp could use some improvements.

Site 9 is extremely close to site 7. Would be great for a large family but otherwise won't rent this space again. Hosts were kind and great! Very annoying, very loud people, very late at night, but that's nothing anyone can control, just a reminder to be respectful of others when camping.

Near the campground we found this beautiful field of colorful spring flowers!

So we just recently stayed here (June 23-June 24 2024) and this is what you need to know. It's a very nice campground. It is smaller than your average campground and all the campsites can probably fit just 1-2 tents comfortably and they are kind of small. Only some sites allow for a trailer. All the campsites are pretty close to each other, some closer than others. Sites I would recommend are 4, 11, 17, 18, 19. These all have good shade and 17-19 are right by a creek which is fun! We stayed at 19 and it was AWESOME. Bugs aren't too bad here. The bathrooms are pretty clean with flushable toilets, but I would bring your own toilet paper if you want to (they have 1-ply and it's super thin). Check in - 3:00 and Check out - 12:00 When making your payment, pay close attention to the white paper on the bulletin board and read the instructions (camp hosts are strict here, they do a sweep at night to crack down on stuff). To have more than one vehicle you pay a $20 fee for the second car. If you are making a reservation, triple check that the dates work for everyone in your party because the cancellation/reservation change policy is ridiculous. $10 fee to change any reservation and you will only receive a partial refund if you cancel your reservation. Does not matter how in advance you do it. Overall, great campground, close to Logan or Brigham City (in case you need anymore supplies) and we had cell service the whole time but also feels like you are in the great outdoors far from town.

I love this little campground. Very pretty, lots of trees and most sites are pretty private with the tree cover. Campground host Stevie was friendly and kept the bathrooms very clean. My campsite was clean as well when I arrived. This is my go to close to home when I don't feel like driving 2 hours to the higher areas especially with current gas prices.
