Ukiah-Dale/Forest Wayside
Overview
Ukiah-Dale Forest State Scenic Corridor offers a tranquil escape into the heart of the Blue Mountains of Northeast Oregon. This scenic rest area and campground stretches along the banks of Camas Creek, providing a shaded retreat under a dense canopy of towering ponderosa pines. Managed as an Oregon State Park, the facility ensures a clean and well-preserved natural environment for travelers seeking a break from the highway. Visitors often stop here to appreciate the dramatic geology of the canyon and the cooling shade that the forest provides during the warm summer months.
Location & Surroundings
The park is situated approximately three miles south of the small community of Ukiah, Oregon, along US Highway 395. This prime location serves as a scenic gateway to the Blue Mountain region, characterized by rugged terrain and high-elevation plateaus. The surroundings are defined by the winding path of Camas Creek, which has carved a stunning canyon over centuries. Because the park sits at an elevation of approximately 3,000 feet, the air remains crisp, and the scenery is dominated by lush greenery and striking basalt rock outcroppings.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive camping destination, Ukiah-Dale provides a rustic RV experience without the distractions of modern technology. The park features 27 primitive campsites that are available on a first-come, first-served basis. While there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups, the park provides potable water and vault toilets for guest convenience during the primary season. The sites are generally level and nestled among the trees, making them best suited for smaller to mid-sized RVs and trailers that do not require expansive clearance.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for those staying at Ukiah-Dale. Anglers frequently visit to test their skills at fishing in Camas Creek, which is known for its quiet banks and seasonal opportunities. The park is surrounded by the vast Umatilla National Forest, offering miles of exploration and opportunities for wildlife viewing, including frequent sightings of elk and mule deer. For those interested in more rugged terrain, the nearby North Fork John Day Wilderness provides an expansive backcountry experience for hikers and nature photographers.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal choice for travelers who prefer off-grid boondocking over resort-style amenities. It is perfect for those seeking solitude and a deep connection with the wilderness, away from the noise of more developed campgrounds. Hunters and fishermen often use the park as a reliable base camp due to its proximity to prime public lands. If your travel style involves unplugging and relaxing by a campfire under a dark, star-filled sky, Ukiah-Dale offers the quiet atmosphere you are looking for.

It was like traveling back in time. The major difference was, the roads. The roads throughout the drive were excellent. Lot's of places to pull over and look or walk. Bring your bug spray!

Great basic campground with water and better than expected bathrooms (lights, flush toilets). Super clean. Only one other person there (Sept 16). Got spot 12. Super quiet when there aren't cars driving by. Loved it. $10/night cash, check, or card (which is a first).

Nice, uncrowded campground off Highway 395 in scenic Ukiah-Dale Corridor. Campground hosts were extremely friendly and rest room while old were clean. 4 Stars instead of 5 because road noise (especially trucks) is noticeable during day but does quiet down at night. Water available throughout campground but no hookups. This is older campground so site are small. Tents, vans, campers, Class C RVs are fine. Trailers over 20 ft. and Class A RVs will be a tough fit.

The beauty of this scenic area cannot be captured on camera. The ponderosa pines are stunning and if you catch a sunrise just after snow fall the colors are unforgettable. I wish camping was open longer throughout the year. We have stayed here many times and driven past it when closed many more times.
