Umatilla/Bull Prairie Lake
Overview
Located within the stunning Umatilla National Forest, Bull Prairie Lake offers a serene escape for RVers seeking a deep connection with the natural world. This high-elevation forest service site sits at approximately 4,000 feet, providing a cooler mountain retreat during the warm summer months. The park surrounds a pristine 28-acre lake, where the scent of Ponderosa pines fills the air and the quiet rustle of the wilderness replaces the noise of the highway. It is a quintessential Pacific Northwest forest experience.
Location & Surroundings
Situated south of Heppner, Oregon, the campground is nestled in the northern reaches of the Blue Mountains. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills, dense evergreen forests, and meadow openings. Travelers will appreciate the well-maintained paved access roads that lead to the site, making it surprisingly accessible for most rigs despite its remote forest location. The area serves as a vital habitat for local wildlife, with frequent sightings of elk, mule deer, and diverse mountain bird species.
Amenities & Park Features
While this is a rustic destination, it provides essential features for comfortable dry camping. Most sites include a paved parking pad, which helps level your rig in the forest terrain. The facility is well-maintained and includes the following features:
- Clean vault toilets and potable water available via hand pumps
- Individual fire rings and heavy-duty picnic tables at every site
- A designated non-motorized boat ramp and several fishing docks
The layout is designed to offer a sense of privacy between sites, ensuring a peaceful stay under the canopy.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the lake itself, which is regularly stocked with rainbow and brook trout. Visitors can enjoy the Bull Prairie Lake Trail, a gentle 1.5-mile loop that circles the water and offers excellent opportunities for photography and nature study. Beyond the park boundaries, the vast expanse of the Umatilla National Forest offers miles of backcountry exploration and rugged forest roads. The nearby town of Heppner provides a charming look at rural Oregon history and is the best place to stock up on supplies.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for RVers who prioritize tranquility and outdoor recreation over modern resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for families wanting to introduce children to the joys of fishing or for solo travelers seeking a quiet spot for reflection. Because there are no utility hookups, it is best suited for those equipped for boondocking or dry camping who want to experience the authentic beauty of the Oregon mountains without the distractions of digital connectivity or heavy crowds.

Great campground! The camp host was AMAZING! SO NICE AND WILLING TO HELP. They have our kiddos fun prizes almost each night. The bathrooms were clean and cared for. The lake was beautiful with a full paved path around the lake. We got number 15, but 16 and 19 looked awesome too. My kiddos were able to ride their bikes around the campground safely. They also delivered fire wood right to your site. 10/10 recommend this campsite!

Great little lake. A paved walking trail with foot bridges and plentiful benches for resting or just enjoying the view from every perspective around the lake. We used the day use area, but there is a really nice campground and other campsites around the lake for campers. There is a dock and many lake access areas for fishing. A small boat ramp for row boats and kayaking...we used it for floating and swimming. No luck on the fishing.

Definitely a hidden gem in Eastern Oregon. The camp host was super helpful, providing firewood delivery and information on the area. Definitely a family friendly campground, if generators bug you and you're tent camping this might not be the campground for you. The host did a great job enforcing the quiet hours.

We really enjoyed our stay at Bull Prairie. It’s a lovely peaceful and serene place to stay. Because of all the fires, we had the campground almost completely to ourselves but campsites are so spread out and well-hidden that you wouldn’t notice more campers very much. The lake is fantastic for swimming and you can easily swim across and back. Our host Heather was super friendly and helpful, visiting us every day and bringing free firewood to our campsite. She and her husband Jody bring a nice personal touch to the campground, taking great pride in their work. Love the cheeky deer! We highly recommend staying there.

Our first time to Bull Prairie and it was an amazing one. This camp ground is for a quiet, peaceful camping experience. If you want to party and play loud music (like the only 1 star review) go somewhere else! Non motorized crafts allowed on the lake. People did swim, but the water is a bit murky and cold. No showers or garbage service. Pack it in, pack it out. There is a lot of nature. Which includes bees and mosquitoes. It is a lake afterall, so it's to be expected. Bring the Off and some candles and it's fine. Pictures are mostly of Site 27, which is right on the water. There is a 1.25mile paved walking path around the lake. There is potable water and firewood is available. The OHV is nearby which you can hear at times during the day. No cell service (Verizon) Fishing allowed. lake is stocked. several docks around lake. That's about it. Great place and great camp hosts. Jody and Heather are amazing. They really care about what they are doing. If you have a bad experience with them, it's probably not them.......
