Umatilla/Frazier

Overview

Frazier Campground, managed within the Umatilla National Forest, offers a serene escape into the high-country landscapes of Eastern Oregon. Located near the quiet town of Ukiah, this destination provides a rustic environment where the scent of Ponderosa pine fills the air. Unlike modern commercial resorts, this park emphasizes a deep connection with nature, offering travelers a peaceful retreat far from the noise of busy interstates. It serves as a gateway to the rugged beauty of the Blue Mountains, making it a staple for those who appreciate the simplicity of forest service camping.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked away in the North Fork John Day Ranger District, the park sits at an elevation of approximately 4,500 feet. The surrounding terrain is characterized by rolling hills, dense timber, and open meadows that come alive with wildflowers in the spring. This remote setting in Ukiah, OR ensures dark night skies perfect for stargazing and a quiet atmosphere. The access roads are generally navigable for most rigs, though drivers should prepare for the winding mountain passes that define the approach to this secluded forest gem.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service site, the amenities here are basic and cater to self-sufficient travelers. The park features include:

  • Vault toilets that are maintained regularly during the peak season.
  • Spacious sites equipped with heavy-duty picnic tables and metal fire rings.
  • Access to hand-pumped potable water typically available in summer.

There are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available, so it is essential to arrive with full freshwater tanks and adequate power. The sites are generally well-spaced, offering a sense of privacy shielded by natural forest vegetation.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activity in the surrounding wilderness. The nearby North Fork John Day River offers opportunities for fishing, wading, and scenic photography. For those interested in local history and scenic drives, the Blue Mountain Scenic Byway provides breathtaking vistas of the Oregon backcountry. Wildlife viewing is a primary draw, as the area is home to Rocky Mountain elk, mule deer, and various raptors. Hikers can explore a network of forest service roads and trails that wind through the surrounding timberline.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is an ideal match for boondockers and dry-campers who prioritize tranquility over modern luxury. It specifically appeals to hunters, photographers, and families looking to unplug and enjoy a traditional outdoor experience. If your travel style involves large motorhomes requiring 50-amp service and Wi-Fi, this might not be the right fit. However, for those with smaller trailers or truck campers seeking a genuine forest immersion, Frazier offers a quiet and affordable basecamp in the heart of the Umatilla National Forest.

I spent the night here. This is an incredible place for off-road vehicles and camping. There are so many places to explore and have fun! I would recommend spending a few days here at least.

This is a very large campground with lots of campsites, lots of quiet (usually if people are courteous). Generally it is not very full so it is quite private. However, there are also several group campsites for gatherings of friends or family.

Huge campground with big spaces. We were there mid week and had the place to ourselves. Near the experimental forest.

Fantastic place to ride! Lots of trails to get lost on, and many types of features to navigate. The trailhead campgrounds were well maintained. There were plenty of spots open over 4th of July weekend as well. I was out riding for three hours by myself, and never ran into another single rider in over 3 hours. I'll be back!
