Umpqua/Diamond Lake

Overview

Umpqua/Diamond Lake offers a serene getaway nestled within the heart of the Umpqua National Forest. Located just miles from the north entrance of Crater Lake National Park, this destination serves as a premier base camp for exploring Oregon’s only national park. The park provides a rustic yet comfortable atmosphere, allowing travelers to immerse themselves in the quiet majesty of the High Cascades while enjoying essential modern conveniences and proximity to legendary landmarks.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated at a high elevation, surrounded by a thick canopy of evergreen pines and fir trees. The air is crisp, and the landscape is defined by the dramatic peaks of the Cascade Range. Its proximity to Diamond Lake provides easy access to one of the region’s most beautiful alpine lakes, known for its mirror-like reflections of Mount Thielsen. This is a true wilderness setting where the sounds of nature replace the hum of city life.

Amenities & Park Features

Designed to accommodate various rig sizes, the park features full hookup sites with both 30 and 50-amp service. Guests can enjoy a variety of functional facilities:

  • Spacious pull-through sites for easy maneuvering of larger motorhomes.
  • A cozy lodge for community gatherings and relaxation.
  • Convenient laundry facilities and clean shower houses.

The layout ensures that every guest feels tucked away in the forest while remaining close to necessary utilities and hookups.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors. Most travelers head straight to Crater Lake National Park to witness the deepest lake in the United States. Closer to camp, Diamond Lake is a hotspot for trout fishing, boating, and swimming during the summer months. For those seeking a challenge, the trail up Mount Thielsen offers breathtaking panoramic views. Additionally, the nearby Umpqua Hot Springs and Toketee Falls provide stunning photo opportunities and relaxing experiences.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for national park enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers who prioritize location over resort-style luxury. It is a fantastic choice for photographers, hikers, and anglers looking for a quiet retreat. Families will appreciate the safe, open spaces for children to explore the natural environment. Nice campground but all the sites are close in proximity to each other and if people don’t have camping etiquette it can get pretty noisy so it isn’t really peaceful. There are only 2 shower houses, one at each end of the campground and they ask for a donation. Our site was not on the water, it was across the street from a site on the water but still had a really wonderful view. We probably would NOT stay again. We hear noise all the time in the city which is why we go camping, to get away from it, but that wasn’t possible for this 2 night experience.

Super pretty & amazing views, great for star gazing, going into Crater Lake National Park open 24hrs, its only a 20ishmin drive, relaxing and was very quiet. Usable water easily available throughout campground. Family friendly environment. Flushable toilets *no soap in bathrooms but have hand dryer. Diamond lake water was warm and calm but a bit rocky in spots.

We loved the place! Our site was next to the lake and was the perfect setting for our family. We enjoyed the tranquility and the lake view. Access to water, restrooms, and hot showers! We will definitely return. Pet-friendly.

We had a wonderful time at Diamond Lake Campground! The staff were super helpful and made check-in easy. The campground itself is beautiful — we had a stunning view of the lake right from our site. The area is peaceful and relaxing, with plenty of space and natural beauty all around. What really made the experience even better were the friendly neighbors. Everyone was respectful and kind, and it created a great sense of community. We loved our stay and would definitely come back again. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a scenic and welcoming place to camp near the lake!

This is our second time at this campground and compared to 7 years ago something must have changed. It wasn’t the views, because the lake is wonderful! Whoever is in charge of the bathrooms really needs to make it more of a routine to clean. I’m not trying to throw shade, I know these are obviously campground bathrooms. Very thankful they are flush toilets. I was not expecting warm water (which there wasn’t any), but no soap and they were just generally very dirty and when we first arrived one of the stalls was completely out of paper. Thankfully I had brought some from home. My husband had to visit the camp hosts to bring attention to the men’s restroom as the only toilet was almost overflowing from another guest. The camp host seemed annoyed and did not fix it until the next day. The camp area is very large, make sure to look at the map on the website and look over the pictures because every site is much different from one end to the other. We stayed in M which was pretty flat, but there were other areas that were much more sloped. Remember your bug spray when you come because being by the water there will naturally be more misquotes. Would have love to give this place a higher rating as the water is quite nice for boating, kayaking and what not and the campsites are nicely shaded with well built picnic tables and fire pits. The whole bathroom cleanliness and one of the water taps breaking while we were there really lowered my overall view of this campground.
