Umpqua/Thielsen View

Overview

The Umpqua and Thielsen View campgrounds offer a rugged, forest-immersive experience on the western edge of Diamond Lake. These sites provide a classic Pacific Northwest camping atmosphere, surrounded by towering pines and the dramatic peaks of the High Cascades. Unlike high-end resorts, these campgrounds focus on the natural beauty of the Umpqua National Forest, serving as a gateway to both water-based recreation and volcanic exploration in the Oregon wilderness.

Location & Surroundings

Situated along the shore of Diamond Lake, these sites offer a front-row seat to the jagged silhouette of Mount Thielsen. The location is conveniently close to the north entrance of Crater Lake National Park, making it a strategic base for explorers. The surrounding terrain is characterized by ancient volcanic landscapes and dense forests, providing a sense of seclusion and tranquility while remaining accessible via the scenic highways near Crescent, Oregon.

Amenities & Park Features

The facilities here lean toward a rustic camping experience, prioritizing the environment over luxury. Each site typically includes a paved parking pad, a fire ring, and a heavy-duty picnic table. While there are no individual utility hookups, visitors have access to potable water and vault toilets throughout the loops. The layout is designed to accommodate a variety of RV sizes, though larger rigs should navigate the forested turns with care to reach their designated spots near the shoreline.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the massive expanse of Diamond Lake, famous for its rainbow trout fishing and boat-friendly waters. A paved eleven-mile cycling path circles the entire lake, offering an easy way to see the various perspectives of Mount Bailey and Mount Thielsen. For those looking to hike, the nearby Mt. Thielsen Trailhead leads adventurous travelers up the slopes of the Lightning Rod of the Cascades for panoramic views of the entire region.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who enjoy dry camping in exchange for unparalleled access to the wilderness. It is a favorite for families looking to fish, kayak, or bike in a safe, scenic environment. If you prefer the sounds of the wind through the pines and a dark sky perfect for stargazing, this forest retreat offers exactly the type of unplugged experience that defines the Oregon Cascades.

Great location and beautiful view of the mountains. Camp sites were fine. Each just had a parking spot and a picnic table. The bathrooms were also well maintained / decently clean for being just toilets like a portapotty. Mosquitos were pretty bad. Like 6-7 out of 10. They would swarm you within seconds. Definitely prepare to wear protective clothing and hide in your tent if needed

Great campground. Spots are well maintained with plenty of flat ground for tents. Bathrooms are clean and well stocked with TP

The mosquitoes were unreal... other than that the camp bathroom was pretty clean and the area seems well kept with trash bins available. The water is very shallow extremely far from shore and the lake has a 10 mph limit for boats. Biggest problem was fish carcasses along the stagnant pools where people were cleaning fish and tossing the head and guts back in the water. One alcove had at least 10 fish heads within 30 feet of shoreline and the bugs were loving it.

What a great campground! Quiet and plenty of firewood around. A3 is a perfect site even though it's close to a restroom, it's not offensively close at all. Very clean. Had a potable H2O spigot just behind us and a short walk to the lake. Bug spray worked great at keeping the mosquitos away. We took the time to look at other campgrounds while we were there and Broken Arrow has showers, very nice and very clean. May want to take some cash as there is a donation box in front of the showers, but they're free. Incredibly cool camp hosts at these sites, helpful and friendly.

I actually love this campground. I have been going here for many years. If you are willing to put up with the monster mosquitoes, the occasional large midge hatch then its great. There is great fishing. But!, can be great one day and terrible the next. Lots of other things to do like hiking, biking, kayaking. Great views from the campground. I am currently giving it threes stars because the campground has become a hectic scene with several overnight campers coming and going with to many of them completely void of campground etiquette. From leaving generators on for all day to dogs constantly barking and just the extra traffic coming and going. Most people at a fishing lake are just trying to relax and get away from the sounds of the city. This has been harder to do the last few years. I also noticed to many camp sites reserved over several days with no one ever showing up. This is just inconsiderate. Don't get me wrong. I think it's great so many new people are going outdoors but it would be nice if they were more considerate of others.
