Uncompahgre/Amphitheater

Overview

Amphitheater Campground offers one of the most dramatic settings in the San Juan Mountains. Perched directly above the historic town of Ouray, this US Forest Service facility sits within a natural glacial bowl that provides a stunning overlook of the surrounding peaks and the valley floor below. Known as the Switzerland of America, this area captures the rugged beauty of Colorado high country, making it a premier destination for travelers seeking a genuine mountain experience away from the crowds.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is located at an elevation of approximately 8,400 feet, nestled among a forest of ponderosa pines and gambel oaks. Its unique position within a rocky amphitheater provides natural wind protection and incredible acoustics. Visitors are often treated to sweeping panoramic views of the Uncompahgre National Forest. The air is crisp, and the surrounding cliffs glow with orange and red hues during the legendary Colorado sunsets that illuminate the canyon walls.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional forest service site, prioritizing nature over luxury. You will find vault toilets and drinking water available throughout the loops, though there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups. Each site features a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings. It is important to note that the access roads are narrow with tight switchbacks, so the park is best suited for smaller trailers and mid-sized motorhomes rather than big rigs.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Direct access to the Ouray Perimeter Trail makes this a hiker’s paradise, allowing you to trek around the entire town without moving your vehicle. A short drive down the hill leads to the world-famous Ouray Hot Springs and the thunderous Box Canyon Falls Park. For those with four-wheel drive, the nearby Alpine Loop offers world-class off-roading through historic mining districts and high-altitude mountain passes that reach over 12,000 feet.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who appreciate a quiet, rustic atmosphere over resort-style amenities. It is a perfect match for outdoor enthusiasts who want to be steps away from hiking trails and rugged Jeep roads. If you prefer serene mountain mornings and star-filled nights away from the glow of city lights, the Amphitheater Campground provides the perfect basecamp for your high-altitude San Juan adventure.

Book it early or get there on a Wednesday or Thursday morning, because this gem fills up fast for good reason. Ideally located within a short drive above Ouray, and within a few short walking miles from the Via Ferrata, this place is excellent. The staff are friendly, present, approachable and knowledgeable, with gentle reminders of bear habits within the surrounding forest, as well as local tips to the area.

Great location as it's close to the Ouray town. Very friendly and helpful hosts! I was also so impressed by how well they maintain the restrooms. Drinking water also available. Overall a very quiet campground but it will be a little bit noisy for the sites near the restrooms. Bring some cash for the payment. There are also large dumpsters right outside the campground. You'll just have to pack everything out.

Great campground, first come first served only. Water spigot is plentiful, bathrooms are clean but sometimes gets smelly. David & Nancy are wonderful host. During our stay, passing storms came upon us & definitely made our night wet & chilly & also gave us a good show of the thunderstorm.

The campsite is well organized. Steve does a great job as its guardian. He found us a nice spot and we were able to fit 2 vans in only one spot. The cost was 28$. The restrooms are very basic and there are no showers. Each site is equipped with a metal pit for the fire. Recommended.

Had an amazing 3-night stay at Amphitheatre Campground! Each site I stayed in had its own charm, and the views were incredible. Huge shoutout to the camp hosts—David, Steve, and Nancy—who were so helpful, kind, and knowledgeable. Their hospitality made the experience even better. I kept extending my stay because it was just that good. Can’t wait to come back!
