Unity Lake

Overview

Unity Lake State Recreation Area serves as a lush, green oasis within the high-desert landscape of eastern Oregon. Situated on the shores of the Unity Reservoir, this park offers a peaceful retreat for travelers seeking water-based recreation and scenic vistas. It is a well-maintained destination that provides a scenic stopover for those traversing the rugged interior of the state, blending natural beauty with essential comforts for a relaxing stay.

Location & Surroundings

Located just off Highway 26 near the small community of Unity, the park is nestled in the foothills of the Blue Mountains. The surrounding geography is defined by rolling sagebrush hills and expansive sky, creating a stark contrast to the blue waters of the reservoir. Its position makes it a strategic basecamp for exploring the historic Gold Belt of Baker County or transitioning between the lush forests and the arid plains of the high desert.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features a cozy campground equipped with 35 electrical sites that include water hookups, making it well-suited for modern RVs. Travelers can take advantage of paved parking pads and easy access to a centrally located dump station. For those bringing watercraft, the accessible boat ramp and handling dock are primary highlights. Clean restrooms with flush toilets and hot showers provide the necessary comforts after a long day spent on the water.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The reservoir is the centerpiece for activity, renowned for being a premier fishing destination for rainbow trout and smallmouth bass. Boaters and paddlers often spend their afternoons exploring the shoreline, while birdwatchers can spot various waterfowl and birds of prey. Nearby, the Burnt River offers additional angling opportunities, and the vast Wallowa-Whitman National Forest provides endless trails for those looking to hike or explore the regional flora and fauna.

Who This Park Is Best For

This state park is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and anglers who prefer a quiet, water-centric environment over the bustle of larger resorts. It is a perfect match for families seeking a safe, contained space for kids to play and fish. RVers traveling the Journey Through Time Scenic Byway will find this an excellent spot to pause, recharge, and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of Oregon’s high desert interior.

What a hidden gem. I had an excellent spot, right near the lake. Full hookups, nearby bathroom and shower, for $34 a night. RV dump station on the way in or out. I was there the Thursday before Labor Day weekend, and the place was pretty much empty. I will find my way back here for a longer stay.

The cabin was clean as were the restroom and showers. Our only complaint is that they should have a playground for kids as there really isn't much to do there if the wind is too strong for activities on the lake.

Had site 27. Level side to side if you hug all the way over to passenger side when backing in. Electric and water. Gravel pad. No shade. Overall good experience and would stay again if in the area. Good Verizon service.

Unity Lake State Park was so lovely. We stayed a week in a cabin and frankly didn't want to leave. It was quiet, comfortable, clean, secure, and beautiful. The hardest part was the bathrooms, which were a distance away. At night there was a wall of bugs to get through to walk in and out of the showers or bathrooms because bugs were drawn to the lights. Uck. Ice and wood available on-site. The town of Unity has a very small market, but we went to Prairie City for gas and John Day for groceries. Saw a lot of wildlife and loved exploring the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. Definitely will be back to this location.

We grabbed one of 3 first come first served sites here as we didn't have a reservation. What an unexpected pleasure. This is a clean, quiet well kept park. It's pretty remote (off highway 26) so maybe that's why it didn't seem that busy. In any case I hope we stay there again. We had water and power for the out of State rate of $37.00 and they have a dump station. There is a short easy nature hike we walked from end to end. You can find it behind the restroom building. Didn't check out the restrooms or showers, sorry.
