Upper Iowa Resort & Rental
Overview
Upper Iowa Resort & Rental offers a scenic retreat nestled in the heart of the Driftless Area of Northeast Iowa. Unlike typical roadside stops, this destination focuses on the natural beauty of the Upper Iowa River. The park provides a blend of traditional camping and modern conveniences, catering to those who want to disconnect while enjoying the rolling hills and limestone bluffs that define this unique corner of the state. It serves as a peaceful basecamp for exploring the rugged terrain of Allamakee County.
Location & Surroundings
Located in the small community of Dorchester, the park is surrounded by some of the most dramatic landscapes in the Midwest. The property sits directly on the banks of the river, where guests are treated to views of towering limestone cliffs and lush hardwood forests. The secluded atmosphere feels far removed from urban stress, yet the park remains accessible via winding scenic byways. This area is famous for its unglaciated topography, offering a mountain-like feel that is rare for the region.
Amenities & Park Features
The resort features spacious RV sites alongside cozy cabin rentals and primitive tent areas. On-site recreation is centered around the unique artesian spring-fed swimming pool, which provides a refreshing break during the warm summer months. Visitors have access to a general store for essentials and a playground for children. One of the standout features is the on-site rental service, which allows guests to easily coordinate tubing, kayaking, or canoeing trips directly from the resort without needing to transport their own equipment.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water activities are the primary draw, with the river offering excellent opportunities for paddling and trout fishing. Beyond the resort boundaries, the surrounding region is a haven for hikers and nature photographers. Notable nearby attractions include the Effigy Mounds National Monument and the Yellow River State Forest, both offering extensive trail systems. The region’s winding roads are also popular for autumn leaf-peeping and exploring the small-town charm of nearby Waukon and Lansing along the Mississippi River.
Who This Park Is Best For
This resort is an ideal match for outdoor enthusiasts and families seeking a classic, river-centered vacation. It specifically appeals to RVers who prioritize natural scenery and active recreation over the manicured concrete pads of urban luxury parks. If you enjoy a peaceful, rustic environment where you can spend your days on the water and your evenings by a campfire, this park offers a genuine and tranquil Iowa camping experience for all ages.

Absolutely love this place! Nothing more you could ask for in this hidden gem. Our selfishness would love to keep this a secret, but the owners have put in a lot of hard work and renovations that deserve to be shown off and shared. Our slice of heaven on Earth that allows us to disconnect and regroup! Highly recommend!

Me and my kids stayed at Upper Iowa Resort for 3 days in a tent. We absolutely LOVE it here and will be back!! The natural pool is awesome and I think the kids were in it 90% of the time, I personally love the sand bottom and that it gradually gets deeper. We took the shuttle and tubed down the Upper Iowa river and the views are honestly unbeatable, will definitely have to kayak down during the fall. The restrooms are clean and the showers actually have pressure and hot water the entire time. The little office/shop has essentials at a very decent price! We honestly just loved our stay so much and can’t wait to come back, it really is a beautiful campground!

I have been coming to this resort for over 30 years. I don't know if it's always been it's current owners. What I can say is it's always fun and clean. I've never had a negative experience and can say some of my fondest memories were and are being made here.
