Vega
Overview
Vega State Park offers a refreshing high-altitude escape tucked away in the heart of the Colorado mountains. Sitting at an elevation of approximately 8,000 feet, this park centers around the scenic Vega Reservoir, providing a lush, meadow-filled landscape that contrasts beautifully with the rugged peaks nearby. It is a true four-season destination, though RV access is most popular from late spring through early autumn when the mountain wildflowers are in full bloom and the weather is ideal for high-country exploration.
Location & Surroundings
Located just outside the quiet town of Collbran, CO, the park is situated on the northeastern edge of the Grand Mesa, the largest flat-top mountain in the world. The surrounding scenery is defined by vast mountain meadows and shimmering blue waters, offering a peaceful atmosphere far from the noise of major interstates. Travelers often appreciate the dramatic views of the surrounding plateau and the frequent sightings of local wildlife, including mule deer and various migratory birds that gather near the shore.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features several distinct campgrounds, with the Early Settlers Campground being a favorite for RVers due to its available electric hookups. Visitors have access to essential shared facilities, including modern restrooms and seasonal coin-operated showers. While the park maintains a natural and rustic vibe, it provides practical conveniences for travelers, such as a central dump station and potable water fill-up points. Most sites offer a picnic table and fire ring, perfect for enjoying the cool mountain evenings.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw at Vega, with fishing and boating on the reservoir topping the list of popular activities. The lake is well-stocked with trout, making it a premier destination for mountain anglers. For those looking to explore on foot, the Vega Creek Trail offers a scenic path through aspen groves and meadows. Additionally, the park serves as a gateway to the Grand Mesa National Forest, where hundreds of alpine lakes and miles of hiking trails await just a short drive away.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal fit for nature enthusiasts and families who enjoy a quiet, water-centric camping experience. It specifically appeals to RVers who prefer the serene, natural setting of a state park over the fast-paced environment of a commercial resort. If you are looking for a tranquil basecamp to explore the scenic byways of Western Colorado or simply want to escape the summer heat in a high-elevation meadow, Vega State Park offers the perfect balance of solitude and outdoor adventure.

Our stay at the lodge was great! Cabin 11 was perfect for our family. Clean and spacious, with great views of the lake and mountains. Staff was awesome and made the experience top notch. If you appreciate an authentic experience this is the place to go!

We had a great time at Vega Lodge. Welcoming staff, knowledgeable about the outdoors, all local wildlife, and geography. Aleesha is kind and warm at the front desk. The small staff handles it all from check-in/out to meals and housekeeping. The small cabins are simply appointed and just perfect for a nice weekend. Breakfast, dinner, and drinks are not to be missed! Luke, the owner, is ever-available with a good story and is also the outfitter/guide. It's a unique Colorado experience that cannot be missed. PS: They are dog-friendly and have a beautiful wedding venue, as well.

This place is an absolute hidden gem 💎 It is a perfect balance of seclusion and comfort all wrapped up into one! Very affordable, Great place to disconnect but also has the option for Wi-Fi at the lodge if needed. The staff and the family there are as down to earth as it gets! & VERY accommodating! We had a group of 40 more motorcycle enthusiast & it was ABSOLUTELY wonderful! We do an annual trip every year, last year we lost our usual spot, however I feel like it was meant to be finding this location! Thank you Luke & family for making it a memorable trip! See you next year🙏🏻💯

Stopped in for some ice and ended up having a drink at the bar. Luke was really friendly and helpful and considering they had just closed and he stayed open for us was really cool. The lodge and bar are awesome with incredible views of the lake and surrounding scenery. Plus there are hundreds of hummingbirds thanks to the feeders that Luke keeps full. Fun place highly recommend!

Spent the weekend at one of the RV hookup sites. We had an excellent time! It was super convenient to grab lunch or dinner and not have to cook something for everyone if we weren’t feeling like it. More time for fishing the lake! Restaurant/bar was lovely. Good food, good drinks. Friendly staff and lots of friendly dogs keeping us company. Has a little store to top off supplies if you forget something. We will definitely come for another stay soon!
