Viento

Overview

Viento State Park offers a lush, forested escape within the heart of the Columbia River Gorge. Known for its towering fir trees and immediate proximity to the water, this park serves as a convenient and scenic basecamp for those wanting to explore the iconic wonders of Northern Oregon. While it maintains a rugged and natural atmosphere, it provides the essential modern comforts required by RV travelers seeking an authentic Pacific Northwest experience under a deep green canopy of Douglas firs and maples.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just eight miles west of the vibrant town of Hood River, the park is uniquely tucked between the southern banks of the Columbia River and the Interstate 84 corridor. This location provides easy highway access but also places visitors in the middle of a dense temperate rainforest filled with moss-covered rocks and ferns. Guests should be aware that the park sits near an active railroad line; the sound of passing trains is a frequent part of the environment, adding a rhythmic, industrial charm to the otherwise tranquil woodland setting.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features over 50 sites equipped with water and electrical hookups, catering to most standard RV sizes. For those needing a bit more, there are limited sites with full-hookup options as well. On-site facilities include well-maintained seasonal flush toilets and hot showers, which provide a welcome touch of comfort after a long day of outdoor exploration. Each individual campsite is outfitted with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring, while a communal dump station is conveniently located for guest use near the park exit.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the park's direct access to a paved segment of the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail, which is perfect for long-distance cycling and scenic walking with views of the river. A short trip east leads to the breathtaking Starvation Creek Falls and various trailheads that climb the gorge walls. Additionally, the nearby city of Hood River is a world-renowned destination for windsurfing and kiteboarding, offering an array of local craft breweries, boutiques, and farm-to-table dining experiences that are just a ten-minute drive away.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal choice for active travelers and weekend warriors who prioritize trail access and regional proximity over total seclusion. It is a fantastic fit for adventurous cyclists and hikers looking to explore the historic sites of the gorge without traveling far from the main road. Because of the consistent ambient noise from the nearby highway and trains, it is best suited for travelers who use their RV as a functional home base while spending their days fully immersed in the vibrant Oregon wilderness.

Great space! Dropped in with friends and joined the CrossFit Viento crew for a fun WOD. Coach Christine was knowledgeable, attentive and ran her class from the targeted warm-up through to the strength portion and our metcon with precision and expertise. She was inviting and welcoming of our crew and the CrossFit Viento community followed suit. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a home base CrossFit gym or for a fun place to pop into while in town for some fitness.

Great experience! Coach was fantastic- welcomed us in- we we from out of town- great vibes from the other athletes- warmup to cool down- very timely, showed equal coaching to both the newer and more experienced athletes. Well organized and super clean space. All equipment has certainly been cared for! If you’re a Hood River local this gym has it dialed. Don’t think twice about becoming a member. If you’re an out of town drop in- prepare for an amazing experience. 5/5 would return!
