Viking Lake

Overview

Viking Lake State Park offers a peaceful retreat centered around a 150-acre man-made lake in southwest Iowa. This park is characterized by its rolling hills and lush greenery, providing a serene backdrop for RVers looking to escape the hustle of highway travel. The park was established in 1957 and has since become a staple for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a well-maintained natural environment with modern camping conveniences.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just east of Stanton, IA, the park is nestled within the scenic Montgomery County countryside. The area is defined by its agricultural heritage and charming Scandinavian influences found in the nearby town. RVers will appreciate the wooded ridges and valleys that surround the water, creating a feeling of seclusion despite being easily accessible from local highways. The landscape transitions beautifully between the shoreline and the upland timber areas.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground at Viking Lake is equipped to handle various RV sizes, offering electric hookups at many of its well-spaced sites. Travelers have access to modern facilities designed for comfort and convenience:

  • Heated restrooms and showers available during the main season.
  • A convenient dump station for self-contained rigs.
  • A large swimming beach and seasonal concession stand.

These features ensure that even while tucked away in nature, guests have the essentials required for a comfortable stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation revolves around the lake, which is highly regarded for excellent panfishing and bass fishing. Hikers can explore over six miles of multi-use trails that wind through the timber and along the lake's edge. Just a short drive away, the town of Stanton offers unique cultural sites, such as the famous coffee pot water towers, which reflect the community's Swedish heritage. Local museums and small-town shops provide a pleasant afternoon excursion for those staying a few days.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for families and nature lovers who prefer a quiet, community-oriented atmosphere over a high-traffic resort. It is a fantastic choice for anglers and birdwatchers who want to be close to the water in a quiet setting. Because of the spacious sites and natural beauty, it also serves as a perfect mid-point stop for RVers crossing the Midwest who desire a high-quality state park experience with reliable facilities.

A five Star campground! Very clean, plenty of camping spots for RV and tent camping! Cabins, a beach,Day lodging and fishing available! Just an hour from Omaha,NE. Minutes from Red Oak, Iowa or downtown Stanton,Ia( near campgrounds). Wi-Fi is spotty due to trees and cell tower is more near Red Oak,Ia

I did a quick visit on the lake, it is a nice spot to relax and you can do it kayak. The restrooms are clean :) ⚠️In the picnic area dont have reception on the phone and you need mosquito repelent⚠️

Nice clean campground and lake! Easy to get to off of Hwy 34. Clean shower houses with no spiders crawling all over and handicap accessible! Close to Vallisca, Stanton, and Redoak. The campground has buddy sites, full hookup sites, and a boat ramp with a kayak launch inside the campground. The camp hosts plan activities for campers like outdoor movies and popcorn, and a lighted kayak parade. There isn't much cellphone service at the campground, but it is pretty good at the beach. Camping spots are shaded by beautiful, well established trees. The fishing at the lake was pretty good too.

The park was full but not overcrowded. Made people watching as fun as nature watching. I have been to this park since before I could walk. It's improved a little bit every year. It's great to go for quiet time when not busy.

Always accessible, mostly quiet. Fishing, boating, walking trails, picnic. Venue rental next to swimming beach. Large camping area-modern to tent. You might even get to play Bingo, watch a movie, or use the loading ramp for your kayak. Google wanted an update....there's water in the lake now. Playground in camping area. Modern to nicer pit restrooms in all area except top picnic area. Dogs can walk trails with you. Lots of picnic space. Two sheltered areas for rent but when not rented still can be used in picnic area. The modern one has indoor kitchen space that does need to be rented. Both have outdoor grills and picnic tables. The modern one has wheelchair accessible tables and modern restrooms.
