Vista Park
Overview
Vista Park is a hidden gem tucked away in the small, historic community of Skamokawa, Washington. Situated directly along the shores of the Lower Columbia River, this park offers travelers a unique opportunity to witness the grandeur of international shipping vessels passing by just yards from the shoreline. It balances a scenic riverside atmosphere with practical camping facilities, providing a tranquil escape from the busier coastal corridors. Whether you are arriving for a weekend of fishing or a quiet midweek retreat, the park serves as a welcoming gateway to the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
Location & Surroundings
The park is nestled within the Skamokawa National Historic District, surrounded by lush green hills and the expansive waters of the Columbia. The local geography is defined by tidal flats and historic homesteads, creating a sense of stepping back in time. Visitors enjoy immediate access to a sandy river beach, which is perfect for beachcombing or watching the tides change. Because it is positioned away from major highways, the quiet rural setting ensures that the primary sounds you hear are the river breeze and the calls of local bald eagles.
Amenities & Park Features
Travelers will find well-maintained accommodations including RV sites with hookups, spacious tent areas, and cozy yurts for those seeking a different experience. The park provides essential comforts such as clean restrooms, hot showers, and a convenient dump station. Families often appreciate the on-site playground and open green spaces for recreation. One of the standout features is the riverside viewing area, which includes benches and interpretive signs that help visitors track the massive container ships and tankers navigating the river’s deep-water channel.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore just outside the park gates. The nearby Julia Butler Hansen Refuge offers exceptional birdwatching and wildlife viewing, specifically focused on protecting the rare Columbian white-tailed deer. Kayaking is a popular activity in the protected sloughs and marshes surrounding the town, providing a peaceful perspective of the shoreline. History buffs should visit the Redmen Hall, a restored 1894 schoolhouse that serves as a museum and gallery, showcasing the maritime and logging heritage of Wahkiakum County.
Who This Park Is Best For
Vista Park is ideal for RVers who prioritize a relaxed, slow-paced environment over the amenities of high-end commercial resorts. It is a fantastic choice for ship-watchers, photographers, and those who enjoy the simple pleasures of riverfront living. Its proximity to the water makes it a favorite for anglers and paddlers looking for easy access to the Columbia. If you value historic charm and a deep connection to the local landscape, this park provides the perfect home base for your Lower Columbia River adventures.

This is a fun park for camping. There is so much to do. Swimming, basketball, tennis, pickle ball, horseshoes, and more. The office has all the equipment needed to use their courts/fields. Warning: Make sure you pack sneakers or something because of the sand burrs in the grass. We took a couple of teenagers, and they had fun swimming, hiking, and kayaking. The hosts and employees are super nice and will help out with any needs. My only dissatisfaction is with the full hookup sites. For some reason, they made the sewer drains sticking up 12 inches or so. That created back draining, so we couldn't use them, even with hose stands. Other than that, no complaints. It is a fun place to relax and have a wonderful time.

We had a great time for the 4th of July weekend! The camp grounds were peaceful and very comfortable. It was pretty packed but everyone was awesome and considerate. The 7 year old had a blast and made some friends too. The whole park and every one in it was super dog friendly. There were fireworks at all so the dogs weren't all skiddish the whole time too. Beautiful sandy beach right on the Columbia. Glad we went. Totally worth the drive!

We just purchased a new-to-us motorhome and this was our maiden voyage. We found Vista Park to be absolutely amazing! The location was quiet and the scenery was beautiful. We had reserved a spot right on the Columbia River so we could watch the ships go by, and we were not disappointed. The staff were extremely helpful and informative, and check-in was a breeze. We will definitely be going back here again.

Love this place. We have made it a tradition for the past 6 years Labor Day weekend to Come camp here. Great location and. The river is close by. The field has a bunch of pokies in it but I wouldn’t dock my 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ just because of that. It makes it apart of our memories and our experience there. Looking forward to coming back this weekend!!!!
