Vogel
Overview
Vogel State Park stands as one of Georgia's oldest and most beloved outdoor destinations. Established in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, this historic site is nestled at the base of Blood Mountain within the Chattahoochee National Forest. It offers a nostalgic atmosphere where historic charm meets natural beauty. RVers flock here to experience the changing seasons, particularly the vibrant autumn foliage that reflects off the park's central 22-acre lake, making it a premier spot for photographers and nature lovers alike.
Location & Surroundings
Located just south of Blairsville, GA, the park is situated at a high elevation, providing a refreshing escape from the summer heat found in lower elevations. The surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains create a dramatic backdrop for every campsite. Travelers arrive via the winding, scenic Gap roads, which offer stunning vistas but require careful navigation for larger rigs. The proximity to the Appalachian Trail makes it a prime basecamp for those looking to explore the rugged wilderness and high peaks of North Georgia.
Amenities & Park Features
The park accommodates various camping styles with dozens of RV sites featuring electric and water hookups. While many sites are back-in, they are thoughtfully integrated into the wooded landscape to provide a sense of privacy. Facilities include well-maintained bathhouses, a laundry station, and a dump station for guest convenience. Recreational features include:
- A 22-acre lake with a swimming beach
- Seasonal pedal boat and kayak rentals
- A mountain-themed mini-golf course and historic museum
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Hiking is a major draw, with the Trahlyta Falls Trail leading to a beautiful waterfall observation deck at the base of the dam. For a more strenuous trek, the Bear Hair Gap Trail offers panoramic views of the lake from above. Beyond the park gates, visitors can explore the local charm of downtown Blairsville or drive to Brasstown Bald, Georgia’s highest peak. The area is also rich with trout streams and the scenic vistas found along the Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway.
Who This Park Is Best For
Vogel is an ideal destination for families and nature enthusiasts who prefer a traditional state park experience over a modern luxury resort. Its peaceful environment and abundance of kid-friendly activities make it perfect for multi-generational trips. Because of its historic layout and winding access roads, it is particularly well-suited for mid-sized RVs and camper vans, offering a cozy, forest-canopy setting that feels worlds away from the hustle of modern city life.

Traveling with my husband, we decided to stop in and see the state park. Didnt realize prices went up to $10 as of January 1st, 2026 from $5. Not a huge fan of the QR code way to pay. Its convenient if you dont have cash but I miss the paper tags that hung on your mirror stating you visited the park. It was a souvenir I liked to have as memorabilia. We were a little disappointed because the lake was dried up due to the dam repairs. So no waterfall either. I was bummed out but the visitor center was great. The ladies inside were really nice. There was a fire place in the lobby area, I really liked that. It would be a great way to spend the day sitting out on the porch looking out over the lake. Maybe it will be filled the next time we come thru. Well kept and beautiful, otherwise.

After camping here earlier in the year we brought the whole family to stay in the cabins. We love them! So nice and clean with many of the comforts from home! Thank you Vogel for such a wonderful experience! We will be back!

We camp ALOT and Vogel is one of our top 3 parks in Georgia to visit!! The new visitors lodge is so nice. gas fireplaces inside and out. New restrooms, rocking chairs under roof for lake viewing. Great camp sites on the creek and new bathhouses!! Hot showers, great hosts.

One of the best state parks in Georgia — about a 2-hour drive from Atlanta. The drive itself is stunning, with winding roads that motor enthusiasts will love, especially in the fall when the yellow, orange, and red foliage is absolutely breathtaking. The trails are great for hiking, particularly if you’re experienced — I highly recommend the Blood Mountain Trail. It’s also a fantastic spot for camping, especially with family. Pro tip: bring your own food and drinks, as there aren’t many options nearby.

Nice quiet campground. The facilities have been recently renovated with upgraded trailer slots with sewer hookups in most. A new, very nice visitor center at the lake. Wi-Fi is sketchy. ATT cell signal very poor. The Wi Fi worked ok.. The camp hosts were awesome!
