Voorhees

Overview

Voorhees State Park in Glen Gardner, New Jersey, offers a tranquil escape into the rolling hills of Hunterdon County. Once a camp for the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, the park now serves as a lush retreat for nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Spanning over 600 acres of protected land, it provides a beautiful balance of historical significance and natural beauty, making it a staple for those seeking a quiet camping experience within the Garden State’s scenic highlands.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the heart of the New Jersey Highlands, the park provides stunning views of the nearby Spruce Run Valley. The landscape is defined by its heavily wooded terrain and rocky ridges, offering a sense of deep seclusion despite being an easy drive from major metropolitan areas like New York City and Philadelphia. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by mature hardwood forests that turn vibrant colors during the autumn months, providing a perfect backdrop for a relaxing weekend getaway or a scenic stopover.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features several loops accommodating both tents and RVs, including specific sites equipped with electric hookups for modern convenience. Visitors have access to essential facilities such as modern restrooms, heated showers, and a convenient on-site dump station for trailers. One of the park’s most unique features is the Paul Robinson Observatory, which is operated by the United Astronomy Clubs of New Jersey and hosts regular public programs for stargazing, taking full advantage of the park's dark skies.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with miles of multi-use trails perfect for hiking and mountain biking, including the popular Vista Trail. The historic town of Clinton, home to the famous Red Mill Museum Village, is just a short drive away and offers charming shops and riverside dining. Additionally, anglers and boaters often frequent the adjacent Spruce Run Recreation Area, while the scenic Ken Lockwood Gorge provides some of the most picturesque trout fishing spots in the entire state.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal destination for nature photographers and stargazers who appreciate a peaceful atmosphere and clear night skies away from light pollution. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a traditional state park experience with enough modern amenities to stay comfortable in a small-to-mid-sized rig. Because of its wooded privacy and hilly terrain, it appeals most to RVers who prefer rustic, natural settings over the crowded atmosphere of commercial luxury resorts.

Nice well marked trails. A few small uphill climbs but nothing too strenuous. Park is dog friendly on a leash. I did see a black bear in the morning. I went in early September. As with most trails it could use a few more markers to make it easier to navigate. Trail is mostly dirt with a few exposed roots and some bigger rocks.

Visited in the summer. Not much to do here. Trails were not enjoyable although I didn't go to the stream trail. I took the vista trail, which has a terrible view of a small parch of grass, past the observatory which was closed. Not sure when it's open. I took the other iverlook trails that overlook a hill with no views. The bathrooms are nice but i don't think its worth staying here instead of the adjacent campground

I enjoy camping here. The bathrooms/showers are clean, each site has a picnic table/ fire ring, and there is a communal playground for the kiddos. BUT, please, wherever you go camping, use good camp etiquette and keep your music and general noise volume on the low side out of respect for your camping brethren.

Very mixed feelings about this campsite. First of all, amazing, new, clean and well maintained bathrooms, which is amazing! Other perks: there's an observatory that does star gazing on Saturday nights. And you get access to Spruce Run and Round Valley for swimming/boating, etc. BUT, the majority of the site here (Voorhees) are extremely rocky with no good place for a tent (and many opportunities for twisting an ankle). I spent half an hour clearing my site, and still I felt multiple rocks under my tent. Every time I had to walk between my car and my picnic table, fire, or tent, I had to pick my way across to avoid tripping and falling. Not a relaxing weekend. Sites 1-4 are grass - grab one of those if you can. The rest are pretty much uninhabitable (which explains why there's always so much availability here.

Beautiful , quiet State Park with fun trails. We love the trail along the stream . Wear appropriate footwear. The easiest trail is to campground . Campground was clean and comfortable . Park itself is very clean and people do not litter one of the top reasons I love this park . They have areas for tents as well as log huts for rent. There are 2 playgrounds with shelters in the park. Park is wonderful for kids as there are all kinds of animals and birds. Just keep in mind that the main road is little bumpy.
