Waiparous Creek Campground
Overview
Waiparous Creek Campground offers a quintessential Alberta foothills experience for travelers seeking a rustic escape. Located within the Ghost Public Land Use Zone, this campground provides a peaceful retreat from the hustle of urban life. With its unserviced sites and natural terrain, it emphasizes a back-to-basics approach to camping. The sound of the nearby creek and the scent of pine create an immersive wilderness atmosphere that defines the character of this popular destination.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 60 kilometers northwest of Cochrane, AB, the park is accessed via the scenic Forestry Trunk Road. The surrounding landscape is a stunning mix of dense coniferous forests and rolling foothills leading toward the Rocky Mountains. The campground sits adjacent to the clear, cold waters of Waiparous Creek, offering a picturesque setting where the rugged beauty of the Alberta wilderness is on full display for every visitor.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive-style facility, the campground focuses on essential needs rather than luxury. While there are no power or sewer hookups, the park provides several basic features for a comfortable stay:
- Unserviced campsites with fire pits and picnic tables
- Access to clean vault toilets
- Manual hand pump for water
The sites are generally well-spaced, providing a sense of privacy among the trees. It is important for RVers to arrive with full water tanks and sufficient battery power to sustain their stay in this dry-camping environment.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The area is a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly those interested in the expansive trail systems nearby. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities during their stay:
- Off-highway vehicle (OHV) trails accessible in the surrounding zone
- Fishing for trout in the Waiparous Creek
- Exploring the scenic Ghost River Valley
For those on foot, the surrounding public land offers endless opportunities for hiking and nature photography, providing dramatic landscapes and exploration possibilities for adventurous travelers.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for self-contained RVers and tent campers who prioritize nature over resort-style amenities. It is a favorite spot for enthusiasts due to the proximity of the trail systems in the region. If you enjoy a quiet, forest-enveloped environment and are comfortable with dry camping, Waiparous Creek provides the perfect basecamp for exploring the rugged foothills. It is less suited for those requiring large-scale luxury or full utility connections.

Beautiful location if you love a lovely clean cold river flowing by your campground and love lots of trails to ride your motorcycles, quads and sidebysides... Can be a little on the noisy side if you don't like the sound of two and four stroke engines buzzing around the hills. For me it's bliss. Campsites are level, private with lots of trees, and the washrooms are clean and well maintained. Best of all, the fire wood is included with the price.
