Wallowa-Whitman/Blackhorse Campground

Overview

Blackhorse Campground offers a quiet escape into the rugged beauty of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. Located along the banks of the scenic Imnaha River, this site serves as a primary gateway to the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. It provides a classic, traditional forest camping experience where the sounds of rushing water and wind through the trees replace urban noise. It is an ideal spot for those looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in the Pacific Northwest wilderness while exploring one of Oregon's most remote and beautiful regions.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 40 miles southeast of Joseph, Oregon, the campground is nestled within a dense forest of ponderosa pines and Douglas firs. The park is a significant stop along the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway, which is famous for its dramatic elevation changes and sweeping vistas. At an elevation of roughly 4,300 feet, the area provides a cool forest canopy that offers a welcome respite from the summer heat found in the lower canyons. This high-country setting creates a serene atmosphere for travelers navigating the northeast corner of the state.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a primitive camping location, specifically catering to travelers who enjoy a self-contained RV lifestyle. While you will not find electrical or sewer hookups here, the park provides essential potable water via hand pumps and well-maintained vault toilets. Each individual campsite is equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for evening meals under the stars. The sites are thoughtfully spaced to offer a sense of privacy, allowing the natural landscape to remain the primary focus of your stay throughout your visit.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors, with fishing on the Imnaha River being a popular activity for those seeking trout or steelhead. Just a short drive away, the Hells Canyon Overlook provides one of the most stunning vistas in the country, looking down into the deepest river gorge in North America. Hikers can access numerous trails leading into the Eagle Cap Wilderness, where alpine lakes and jagged peaks await. For a change of pace, the nearby town of Joseph features world-class bronze foundries and charming local galleries.

Who This Park Is Best For

Blackhorse Campground is an excellent fit for self-sufficient RVers who prefer rustic, natural surroundings over the amenities of a modern resort. Because of the winding mountain roads and specific site layouts, it is best suited for small to medium-sized trailers and motorhomes. If you are a traveler who values peaceful boondocking-style camping and wants to spend your time wildlife watching or relaxing by the river, this quiet forest destination provides the perfect backdrop for your next mountain adventure.

Dropped in unexpectedly and unplanned. No water, pack in and out, no garbage collection. Overall, great, stayed in space #14 which was spacious and near the river. Quick drive to Hells Canyon overlook.

I traveled here during the week in late August -- the weekend after schools in Idaho started back up. The campground was well tended and it was easy to score a site _ though it being midweek might be the difference. Nice and quiet. Large sites suitable for tenting or RVs. Sites are along the river, which makes for relaxing background noise. Having two vault toilets is a nice bit of luxury. Not surprisingly, but FYI, that there is no cell service here. However, if you really need to be connected, the Hells Canyon Outlook is about 8 miles away and has 4G/LTE service.
