Cotton Hill Park is a premier Army Corps of Engineers destination situated on the expansive Walter F. George Lake in Fort Gaines, Georgia. Known for its quiet atmosphere and scenic vistas, this park offers travelers a chance to escape the noise of modern life. The campground is nestled among towering pines and hardwoods, providing ample shade and a sense of privacy for each visitor. It serves as a gateway to exploring the massive 45,000-acre reservoir often referred to locally as Lake Eufaula.
Location & Surroundings
Located just north of the historic town of Fort Gaines, the park is positioned along the fertile banks of the Chattahoochee River. The surrounding landscape consists of rolling hills and dense woodlands, which create a serene backdrop for those staying near the water's edge. Because it is situated right on the Georgia-Alabama border, visitors have easy access to diverse ecosystems and regional history. The lake itself is the centerpiece, offering miles of undeveloped shoreline and clear horizons for sunset viewing.

The park features 104 campsites, many of which are equipped with electric and water hookups suitable for large RVs. Travelers will find convenient facilities such as modern bathhouses with hot showers, laundry rooms, and a dedicated dump station. For those looking to get on the water, the park provides multiple boat ramps and docks for easy lake access. Families often appreciate the on-site playground and the well-maintained hiking trails that wind through the forest, offering glimpses of local wildlife and migratory birds.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities in this region. The lake is widely considered the Bass Capital of the World, making it a bucket-list destination for serious anglers. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore George T. Bagby State Park, which offers a championship golf course and additional dining options. History buffs should visit the town of Fort Gaines to see its restored frontier fort. Additionally, the stunning colorful cliffs at Providence Canyon State Park are close enough for a memorable day trip.

Helpful and friendly staff member behind the desk. She explained we could park in the parking lot out front, so we could bike ride trails. She also showed me on the map where to go. The office area had state and COE brochures available, as well as local plant & wildlife information.

3-7-22. Visitor center still closed with a stupid Covid excuse sign on the door. Saw employees without masks coming and going in another door while we were there. Apparently the building is safe enough for them. Federal dollars hard at work doing nothing.
