Wasatch/Albion Basin Campground
Overview
Albion Basin Campground is a premier high-altitude destination nestled at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon in Alta, Utah. Sitting at an elevation of approximately 9,500 feet, this rustic escape offers a truly immersive nature experience. It is world-renowned for its stunning summer wildflower displays, which paint the meadows in vibrant colors. Because of its sensitive ecosystem and high elevation, the camping season is relatively short, typically running from July through September, making it a highly sought-after spot for those seeking high-alpine solitude.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is situated within a dramatic glacial basin surrounded by the jagged peaks of the Wasatch Mountains. The environment is alpine and rugged, offering incredible views of Devil’s Castle and Sugarloaf Peak. Visitors are enveloped by fields of paintbrush, columbine, and lupine during the peak bloom in mid-summer. The air is thin and crisp, and the scenery is characterized by massive granite outcroppings and scattered stands of subalpine fir, providing a breathtaking backdrop for a mountain camping adventure.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a primitive, dry-camping facility suited for those who appreciate a back-to-basics approach. The campground provides vault toilets and potable water, but there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available for RVs. Travelers should be aware that the access road to the basin is unpaved and can be narrow. Due to tight turns and small parking pads, the park is strictly limited to smaller rigs and camper vans, with most sites accommodating vehicles only up to 22 feet in length.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw at Albion Basin. The most popular activity is hiking the Cecret Lake Trail, a family-friendly path that leads to a crystal-clear alpine lake. Photography is also a major highlight, especially when the wildflowers are at their peak. For those interested in wildlife viewing, the basin is a frequent haunt for moose and mule deer. The nearby Alta Ski Area offers additional summer exploration opportunities, while the city life of Salt Lake is only a short drive away.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for adventurous van lifers and owners of small travel trailers who prioritize natural beauty over modern luxury. It is a haven for hikers, photographers, and anyone looking to escape the valley heat for cool, high-elevation temperatures. If you enjoy off-grid camping and waking up to the sight of mountain peaks rather than urban sprawl, this is your place. However, it is not suitable for large motorhomes or those requiring full utility connections.

Absolutely beautiful place for portraits! End of July-Early August is typically when the flowers are in full bloom. Don't forget the bug spray!

Beautiful, quiet campground. Each site has a plastic dipped metal picnic table, a fire ring, and a parking pad. The ground is packed gravel and tree needles, so not much chance of mud. Our site, #23, has space for 3 tents. There are no hookups and just pit toilets, but the pit toilets are the nicest I've come across. Enclosed in a nice modern building, and they don't smell. The campground host lights a scented candle inside the toilet building at night. The road through the campground and leading to it has many rills and washouts, so drive slowly. Each is marked by orange cones to give you a heads up. I personally would not want to drive a camper through here, or try to park it at a site, but we saw several smaller campers and camper trailers here. Beautiful scenery! FYI- you might not want to pitch your tent under trees that have pinecone bits underneath where squirrels have been eating. You might get woken up earlier than you want by pinecones being dropped on your tent! Cute little squirrels, though.
