Wasatch/Moosehorn Lake Campground

Overview

Wasatch/Moosehorn Lake Campground offers a quintessential high-mountain experience within the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Located at an elevation of over 10,300 feet, this campground provides a cool refuge from the summer heat of the Utah valleys below. It is set against the dramatic backdrop of Bald Mountain, offering travelers a serene environment where the scent of pine and the stillness of the water define the stay. This is a place where the pace of life slows down, favoring the natural rhythms of the mountain wilderness.

Location & Surroundings

Situated along the iconic Mirror Lake Scenic Byway, the campground is surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Uinta Mountains. While the location is associated with Hanna, UT, the park sits deep within the forest, surrounded by lush subalpine meadows and dense stands of spruce and fir. The proximity to Moosehorn Lake allows for immediate access to the water, where the reflections of the surrounding rocky peaks create a stunning visual landscape that is particularly beautiful at sunrise and sunset.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a rustic destination designed for those who appreciate a traditional outdoor experience. The facility focuses on essential features rather than modern luxuries:

  • Picnic tables and fire rings provided at each site for outdoor dining and evening campfires.
  • Access to potable water via spigots located throughout the campground during the peak summer season.
  • Standard vault toilets maintained by the forest service for guest convenience.

The campground layout is generally best suited for smaller RVs or trailers due to the tight turns and the natural landscape. There are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available on-site.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities in this high-altitude playground. The Bald Mountain Trailhead is located just a short distance away, offering a popular hike that leads to panoramic views of the High Uintas Wilderness. Fishing is a favorite pastime at Moosehorn Lake, which is known for its trout populations. Visitors can also explore nearby Mirror Lake for additional non-motorized boating, or enjoy a scenic drive further along the byway to discover numerous alpine overlooks.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for self-contained RVers who prefer a boondocking style of camping within a managed forest setting. If you value quiet nights, high-altitude scenery, and immediate access to hiking trails over modern luxuries like Wi-Fi or electricity, this park fits your style. It is a premier choice for nature photographers and families looking to disconnect from the digital world and immerse themselves in the raw, natural beauty of one of Utah's highest accessible camping areas.

I can’t say enough good things about this place! The campground host is fantastic, and the location offers breathtaking views. Fishing here is excellent, and the convenience of scanning and paying is a great feature—the host provides a QR code, so just make sure to download the app and save your credit card beforehand, as there’s no internet access. You’ll also get to enjoy beautiful sunsets in the evening. My only suggestion would be to improve the cleanliness of the bathrooms. The campsites are spacious and provide plenty of privacy, especially the ones at the end. Overall, I highly recommend giving it a try—you’ll love it!

The uintas are beautiful. Moosehorn is beautiful. Loved the pines and wild flowers. The campsites here are right on top of each other. There is little privacy. The further you go in seemed to allow for more space. We were way too close to the main road and way too close to other campers, where allowed to stay up drinking and laughing until 2:00am. Views are beautiful. Fishing wasn’t amazing. We will try another lake next year.

A beautiful and relaxing campground situated adjacent to Moosehorn Lake. Woke up to beautiful views of Bald Mountain and this was just the perfect place to relax. Each campsite has a picnic table and a fire ring. There are pit toilets located throughout the campground but no running water is available so pack in water as needed. The campground host Marc was so friendly, welcoming and hospitable. He checked in on us and made sure we had everything during our visit here. Marc is an excellent host. This campground is located at high elevation so be prepared for changing weather conditions and cold temperatures even during the summer time. The views are worth the visit.

Just spent 2 nights at the Moosehorn Campground site 12 and we loved it! The lake is absolutely stunning, and even though it was a packed weekend, it didn’t feel crowded at all. Campground Host Marc was great, extremely helpful, did a great job all around, they even had coloring pages for my kids which they loved This is maybe 1 mile up the road from Mirror Lake, we took a short drive there and walked around the lake’s edge which was awesome. It was a VERY busy week for this campground, you’re going to want to get a reservation or go early if you’re going to escape the July heat. Well worth it tho This campground, like pretty much everything in the Uinta’s, has pit toilets so be prepared for that

The whole experience was great! The host, Marc, was welcoming and worked so hard every day to keep the sites clean and tidy. It was the holiday week and weekend and the sites were pretty full but all the guests were polite and respectful of everyone there. It is a beautiful location with a stunning view of the lake and mountains. I will definitely be back this summer!
