Wasatch/Redman Campground
Overview
Redman Campground offers a high-elevation escape nestled in the scenic Big Cottonwood Canyon. Located within the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, it sits at over 8,000 feet, providing a cool retreat from the summer heat of the valley. This is a rustic, natural setting where the air is crisp and the mountain views are expansive. It is a premier choice for those looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in the Wasatch Mountains.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just a short drive from Salt Lake City, the campground is surrounded by a dense forest of aspen and evergreen trees. The environment transitions from rugged rocky peaks to lush wildflower meadows depending on the season. Its proximity to both Solitude and Brighton mountain resorts makes it a central hub for alpine exploration. Visitors can enjoy the serene atmosphere created by the surrounding wilderness and the gentle breeze through the high-altitude canopy.
Amenities & Park Features
As a Forest Service facility, Redman Campground prioritizes a primitive experience. There are no electrical or water hookups, making it ideal for dry camping. The park provides essential amenities to ensure a comfortable stay:
- Vault toilets and seasonal drinking water access.
- Individual sites featuring a fire ring and picnic table.
- Paved parking spurs suitable for medium-sized RVs and trailers.
The roads are paved, though larger rigs should check length limits, as most sites accommodate vehicles up to 30 to 40 feet in length.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here. A short walk or drive leads to Silver Lake, where an accessible boardwalk offers wildlife viewing and fishing opportunities. Hikers can access a vast network of trails leading to alpine lakes like Lake Mary or the popular Donut Falls. During the summer, nearby ski resorts offer mountain biking and disc golf. The scenic guard station and historic mining remnants in the area add a touch of local history to every excursion.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is perfect for self-contained RVers who appreciate a rustic mountain vibe over luxury resort amenities. It appeals to nature photographers, hikers, and families who want to experience the Wasatch Mountains during their vibrant summer months. If you seek solitude and star-filled nights away from city lights, Redman Campground provides an authentic Utah mountain experience that is hard to beat for traditional camping enthusiasts.

This is a beautiful location with lots of pine trees. The campground is at a higher elevation so a person needs to be prepared for surprise dips into nighttime low temperatures. It was early August and got down to 39 degrees F. Some families in tents left the next day. But it's beautiful and peaceful. We enjoyed our week there.

We stayed at campsite 18 in Redman Campground and overall had a great time. The site is close to the bathrooms, which were clean and had running water. It’s nicely tucked away behind trees, offering some privacy from other campsites. The site is partially shaded ... we camped in August, and both the picnic table and tent area stayed mostly shaded throughout the day thanks to tall trees ... The images posted were taken around 11 a.m. in mid-August. On the downside, it’s close to the road, so you’ll occasionally hear noise when a large vehicle passes. There’s also a power line above the tent area, which is more of a visual distraction than a safety concern. The parking spot is mostly level, but the site itself has some slope. The site has a fire pit, table, and potable water is nearby. Overall, it was a good spot and we enjoyed our stay. Note: Pets are not allowed anywhere in Big Cottonwood Canyon

Redman is a high altitude camp with abundant trees and mountain atmosphere. Streams running through it and cooler summer temps. So many hiking and other outdoor activities all around and at Brighton.

Well, reading the previous person’s review (from last week), I lol’Ed. Anyway, the 5 of us with 2 kids stayed here and the couple who booked it had rebooked it from last year. We all agreed that this is a very nice campsite. Large trees. Large covering. 80 degrees in the day (of June) and 50s at night. We were the louder ones with kids running around at 8:30pm and 9:30am. There was a running stream that was DRY so that sucked. Other camp sites have huge boulders so look around (I think #42). We stayed at #35(?) that could fit 8 tents with decent space. For the 3 tents we had, awesome space and quietness. We cooked and grilled. The water was running at the toilet site but there is no running water at each camp site. On the plus side, there’s 5G. lol. I guess technology has caught up after 2 decades of trying. So for a campsite 13 miles from the house of Salt Lake, incredible.

Started with an email notification that said water was down at the campground. I emailed back, to ask if this was the bathroom, or just culinary water. Only got an email back confirming that water was down, but said nothing about bathrooms. We were traveling with elderly family, and only rented here because of said bathrooms. Emailed again asking if bathrooms were down and about cancellation policy due to no water, and received zero response. Because we had no idea if we would get money back, we ended up keeping the reservation, with an RV to accommodate family. This campground IS NOT RV friendly. I would NEVER take an RV through the loop; it is uneven, narrow roads, with zero room to backup. On top of all of this, had people show up 11 p.m., yelling, hollering at incoming cars, taking loudly, then leaving around 4 a.m. Probability would be: people showing up after closing, and leaving before opening, KNOWING no one patroled the area. Nobody came around to kick them out, or tell them to be quiet. Woke EVERYONE up at several surrounding camps. Someone from a camp went and told them to keep it down, but it didnt stop. Next morning, kids hadn't slept and crying; adults were irritable from not sleeping as well. Terrible experience. Where were the camp hosts, or someone to make sure people weren't being belligerent, from what I assumed drunk? To continue with this way less than stellar experience, the next day on the other end of the campground, someone had loud speakers and played loud music all day. I love music, but the fact that we could hear it from one site of the campground to the other was a bit much. I will try to upload a video that will have people from our campground, and from the other playing music. Will never stay here again. Zero stars. Would NOT recommend. Worst campground we have ever stayed at. WORST.
