Washington County Park offers a tranquil retreat on the scenic shores of South Holston Lake in Southwest Virginia. This park combines the serenity of a lakeside escape with the convenience of being near the historic town of Abingdon. Known for its lush landscapes and direct water access, it provides a balanced experience for those seeking a nature-focused getaway without sacrificing accessibility to local culture, dining, and essential services.
Location & Surroundings
The park is situated approximately ten miles south of Abingdon, nestled within the rolling hills of the Appalachian Mountains. Its primary draw is its extensive frontage on South Holston Lake, a massive reservoir famous for its clear waters and mountain views. The surrounding area is defined by winding country roads and thick forests, offering a true sense of seclusion while remaining within a short drive of Interstate 81 and the Tennessee border.
Amenities & Park Features
Facilities at the park are designed for outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate a functional, rustic environment. RV sites include water and electricity hookups, supported by a centrally located dump station for visitor convenience. Travelers have direct access to a concrete boat ramp and a public swimming area, making it easy to enjoy the water. The park also features well-maintained bathhouses, multiple picnic shelters for group gatherings, and a playground for families.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
A highlight of any stay is the proximity to the Virginia Creeper Trail, a world-renowned rail-trail perfect for cycling and hiking. Anglers will find excellent fishing opportunities on the lake, while history buffs can explore the brick-lined streets of Abingdon to visit the Barter Theatre or local artisan shops. Additionally, the park serves as a great home base for those exploring the Cherokee National Forest or attending nearby regional festivals.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for travelers who prioritize waterfront recreation and a quiet, natural atmosphere over resort-style luxuries. It is particularly well-suited for boaters, fishers, and families looking for a traditional camping experience. Best campground in the area. The view of the lake is amazing. The staff always have smiles on their faces. Super quiet overnight and most of the mornings. We will stay here again.

beautiful lake lots of space good shade perfect to take out for hoeing; There is an area where adults as well as children can bathe. There is a table and chairs. You can take your boat with your chairs and floats. There are bathrooms to change in. You can enjoy time with family and friends.

I had site 17 which was lake front. The only negative was no picnic table but they brought me a wooden one that was rickety. No trees for shade but over all great place. It is very quiet and peaceful. I will be back. The view is spectacular!

If you love the outdoors and are ready to get into nature, I recommend this park. It is on Holston lake, a large lake expanding two states! Have a camper? This park offers campsites that are quiet, kid and dog friendly, and beautiful.
