Washington County SRA
Overview
Washington County State Recreation Area offers a tranquil escape for RVers who appreciate the serenity of a natural lakeside setting. Spanning over 900 acres, the park's centerpiece is the 248-acre Washington County Lake, which provides a scenic backdrop for various outdoor activities. Whether you are looking for a dedicated fishing trip or a quiet place to park your rig while traveling through Southern Illinois, this state-managed site offers a classic camping experience characterized by mature trees and abundant local wildlife.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just a few miles south of Nashville, IL, the park is easily accessible for travelers. Despite its proximity to local highways and regional transit routes, the recreation area feels tucked away from the noise of modern life. The surrounding landscape consists of rolling hills and lush hardwood forests, creating a natural buffer that enhances the park’s peaceful atmosphere. Visitors often enjoy the heavy canopy of oaks and hickories that provide excellent shade for many of the campsites during the summer months.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground accommodates RVers with over 100 Class A sites featuring electrical hookups. While individual sites do not offer sewer connections, a convenient dump station and community water hydrants are available on-site for all guests. The park includes seasonal shower buildings and restrooms to ensure a comfortable stay. For those bringing boats, the park provides multiple launch ramps, though there is a 10-horsepower limit on the lake, which helps maintain the quiet environment for which the park is known.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw, with over 7 miles of hiking trails that wind through the woods and along the shoreline. Anglers frequent the lake to catch largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish throughout the season. Beyond the park, the charming town of Nashville offers local dining and essential supplies. For a unique family outing, the nearby Rainbow Ranch Petting Zoo provides an interactive experience, while the wider Washington County area is perfect for scenic rural drives and bird watching.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for anglers and nature lovers who prefer a rustic, state park atmosphere over a commercial resort. The spacious, wooded lots appeal to RVers seeking privacy and a closer connection to the outdoors. It is also a fantastic choice for families looking for an affordable getaway where the focus is on hiking, fishing, and evening campfires. If your travel style prioritizes peace and quiet and scenic water views, this recreation area is an excellent Southern Illinois destination.

We love the scenery at Washington County Lake. Horse shoe pit for you to play. Fishing decks, tons of beautiful pine trees.

We rented a cabin for 2 nights. It was right on the water. Only 2 cabins on site but they are nice. Cabins include 5 beds, air-conditioning, heat, power hookup, and table and chairs. Fire pit, grill, porch, picnic tables, and plenty of parking. Water, restroom, showers on site but not in the cabin. It wasn't a problem for us. Especially at $45 a night. You can't beat it. We will be back!!

Beautiful country lake and location, quiet, pretty, lots of good views and wildlife, as well as good opportunities for camping, fishing and any other outdoor pursuits. Not too bad a haul from St. Louis, without the crowds of other similar spots in southern Illinois. Staff is friendly and works hard, but state cuts have hit them hard and I always worry about the future of this very nice retreat from the day-to-day world. Visit, take a walk, a run, a bike or a boat. Have fun!

Great state park for tent camping. Some nice spots right on the lake all with fire pits and tables. It is a small lake and much more quiet than some of the larger lakes nearby. There are boats to rent, a decent little bait shop and lots of places to picnic. Well maintained and mowed nicely. 10HP limit on lake and no swimming, just fishing. I like to do a little cyclo-camping here. Not as flashy as the big lakes but a nice quiet get a way.
