Watauga Dam Campground

Overview

Watauga Dam Campground offers a serene escape managed by the Tennessee Valley Authority in the heart of East Tennessee. Situated directly on the banks of the Watauga River, this park provides a unique opportunity for travelers to stay in a lush, wooded environment. It serves as a gateway for outdoor enthusiasts looking to explore the rugged beauty of the Appalachian foothills while staying in a well-maintained, public facility that emphasizes the natural landscape over commercial flair.

Location & Surroundings

Located in Elizabethton, TN, the park sits just below the massive Watauga Dam, which creates a cool, consistent flow of water ideal for local wildlife and recreation. The surrounding landscape is defined by the steep, forested ridges of the Cherokee National Forest. This positioning ensures that guests enjoy a cooler microclimate during the summer months, with the sounds of the rushing river providing a constant, relaxing backdrop for a peaceful stay.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features approximately 29 sites, many of which offer water and electric hookups to accommodate modern RVs. Guests have access to a clean bathhouse with hot showers and flush toilets, ensuring comfort in a rustic setting. Each site is typically equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, while a centrally located dump station is available for self-contained units. The proximity to the river makes the riverside sites highly sought after for their immediate water access.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

This area is a premier destination for world-class trout fishing, as the cold tailwaters of the river are famous for brown and rainbow trout. Just a short drive up the hill, visitors can access the expansive Watauga Lake for boating, kayaking, and swimming. Hikers will appreciate the proximity to the Appalachian Trail, which crosses through the nearby mountains, offering breathtaking vistas and challenging terrain for those looking to explore the backcountry on foot.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for anglers and outdoor adventurers who prioritize natural beauty and river access over resort-style amenities like pools or clubhouses. It is a perfect fit for RVers seeking a quiet, peaceful atmosphere where the primary entertainment is found in the great outdoors. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sound of moving water and waking up to misty mountain mornings, this park will fit your travel style perfectly.

One of our favorite places to unplug and unwind. Where else can you camp and catch trout. It's very peaceful and quiet and the staff is friendly and helpful. Lake Watsgua is close by and the Appalachian Trail is close also by. Camp sites are roomy. They have electric , water, fire rings, and picnic tables. There is a dump station. The bathrooms are clean

Campsites very well maintained. Bath houses are clean and well stocked. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. This is now one of my favorite campgrounds. Watch out for goose poo on the riverbank.

Visited Watauga Dam Campground for the first time. It was truly enjoyable. Very scenic. Very quiet!!! Lots of wildlife to view. We were lucky enough to spot 2 bear cubs, and many birds. Fellow campers were friendly and courteous. Campsite managers were very nice. Bathrooms and shower very clean.

You will not find a more peaceful and relaxing place that is so isolated yet close to everything. The natural beauty of the area is breath taking. The rv sites are large and easy to get into. The grounds and bathhouse are well maintained. The staff are friendly and have always welcomed me like I'm coming back home. The more I stay, the less I want to leave.

Serenity and beauty at this campground! Hosts were helpful and kind-came by a couple times a day to pick up our trash. Took the canoe out on the river right from our campsite and enjoyed the ducks and geese that floated by. Beautiful waterfall and even a black bear sighting right across the river. Glad he stayed on his side. Totally off-grid but could drive a couple miles to connect when needed. Would definitely return here for a peaceful escape.
