Watoga
Overview
Watoga State Park stands as the largest unit in the West Virginia state park system, offering a sprawling mountain retreat for RVers. Spanning over 10,000 acres of rugged forest, it provides a deep immersion into the natural beauty of the Appalachian Highlands. The park is a Certified International Dark Sky Park, making it a premier destination for stargazing enthusiasts and photographers seeking a break from urban light pollution. For those who enjoy a rustic, back-to-nature experience, this park serves as an expansive playground in the heart of the mountains.
Location & Surroundings
Nestled in the heart of Pocahontas County near Marlinton, the park is surrounded by the lush Monongahela National Forest. The landscape is defined by its high-elevation ridges and the tranquil waters of the Greenbrier River. RVers will find the drive to the park scenic but winding, leading to a secluded environment where the rustling of hardwoods replaces the noise of highway traffic and city life. The remote location ensures a quiet stay where visitors are surrounded by diverse West Virginia wildlife and high-altitude flora.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features three distinct campgrounds, with Riverside and Beaver Creek providing electric hookups suitable for many RV types. Guests have access to essential facilities including modern bathhouses, a dump station, and a seasonal swimming pool. For those wanting to explore the water, Watoga Lake offers paddleboat and rowboat rentals. The camp store provides basic supplies, while over 40 miles of trails allow for hours of woodland exploration right from your campsite. This mix of utility and nature allows for a comfortable yet authentic mountain camping trip.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure extends beyond the park boundaries with the Greenbrier River Trail, a 78-mile rail-trail perfect for biking and hiking. History and science buffs will enjoy a short trip to the Green Bank Observatory, while nature lovers can explore the unique ecosystem of the Cranberry Glades Botanical Area. Fishing in the Greenbrier River is a popular pastime for those looking to catch smallmouth bass or trout in a pristine mountain setting that defines the region. These sites provide excellent day-trip opportunities for campers looking to explore the broader area.

The park is very nice. Well maintained and the cabin was fantastic. Rustic CCC cabin but had a nice bathroom with a shower. The kitchen has been upgraded with nice 4 burner propane stove. Has a refrigerator and new cabinets. Nice big fireplace and they furnished one bundle of wood for every night you are staying.

Beautiful state park, with a peaceful river flowing through it. The campground is fabulous. Also lovely cabins and plenty of hiking trails!

Stay "off the grid" right here in WV. Lots of hiking trails, a lake and swimming pool in season, cabins and camp grounds. Best of all its adjacent to the 80mi Greenbrier River trail for biking, hiking and horseback riding. But understand... there's no internet, TV or phone service anywhere in the park except at one location... the park office. Bring a book instead.

We had a river side site. Amazing! Restrooms are old but are kept very clean WiFi at bathhouse was perfect Night Sky at the dam was breathtaking. Don’t miss this. Greenbrier Bike Trail nearby was good. We rode 65 miles. Store in Seebert close by for necessities. Arrowhead trailhead near camp check in. Great view at the top of the hike.

Decided to take a 5 day vacation before our busy summer starts. This park is wonderful. We got a cabin and it was well above our expectations. Had everything needed from bedding, towels, pots, pans, knives and utensils. Cabin was super clean! The cabin we stayed in even came with a several resident deer that would visit every morning and evening. Can't wait to go again..
