Watson Mill Bridge

Overview

Watson Mill Bridge State Park offers a unique blend of historical significance and natural beauty in the rolling hills of Georgia. Centered around the longest covered bridge in the state, the park provides a tranquil setting for RV travelers looking to step back in time. Spanning the South Fork of the Broad River, this destination is famous for its 229-foot historic structure and the serene atmosphere created by the rushing water below. It is a well-preserved piece of local history that serves as a quiet retreat for those seeking a slower pace of life.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Comer, Georgia, the park is conveniently located about 20 miles northeast of Athens. The surrounding area is characterized by lush forests and the gentle flow of the South Fork Broad River, which defines much of the park's geography. While the setting feels secluded and deeply immersed in nature, it remains accessible for modern RVers. The terrain is relatively flat near the river but offers rolling wooded trails that provide a sense of isolation from the hustle and bustle of nearby urban centers.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground accommodates RVs with several sites featuring water and electrical hookups. While it maintains a rustic state park feel, travelers have access to essential facilities including a dump station and centrally located comfort stations with hot showers. For those traveling with horses, the park is particularly well-known for its dedicated equestrian campsites and stables. Visitors can also enjoy picnic shelters and a playground, making it a functional space for extended stays in a natural environment.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw at this location, with over 12 miles of hiking trails and dedicated paths for mountain biking and horseback riding. Many visitors spend their afternoons fishing or wading in the shoals just below the historic bridge. Just a short drive away, the city of Athens offers a vibrant cultural scene, including the Georgia Museum of Art and the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. This allows travelers to combine a wilderness experience with the dining and shopping opportunities of a major college town.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal destination for history buffs and photographers who want to capture the iconic bridge and scenic river views. It is also a top choice for equestrian travelers who require specialized facilities for their horses while on the road. Because of its quiet atmosphere and lack of commercial distractions, it is best suited for couples or families who enjoy self-contained outdoor activities like hiking and fishing. It is perfect for those who prioritize a scenic, rustic environment over high-end resort amenities.

What a gem in GA. One of the only covered bridge in GA it's worth the trip. Either walking or driving over the bridge you will love the experience. Great place for a picnic, day hike or just relax by the water. There are picnic tables available, camping on the wkend or canoe on a warm summer days.

Friendly staff at the Visitor Center. There's a trail that runs beside the river, that runs under the bridge. There are several trees that are down, but all back in the woods off the trail, or removed from the trail. The 2.5 mile trail was moderate. It is VERY well marked and we'll maintained!

Beautiful historic one lane bridge. They have covered pavilions with tables, a playground, a gift shop and restrooms are located on the outside of the gift shop on the porch for easy access. We didn't inquire about them, but there were kayaks under shelter, possibly for rent.

We decided to hike one of trails and had a fun morning. My wife and I are both 60 and it’s a fairly easy hike. 2.5 miles and it took about 90 minutes. There’s one slight hill and lots of benches to sit and take a break if needed. After our hike we met up with one of the Park employees, Cole, and he gave us a history lesson about the bridge and other information about the park. It’s a great way to spend a day and I would recommend it to most folks.

there is no sewer hook up but everything else about this Park is absolutely fantastic. It's dark. It's quiet you're surrounded by trees that people are very kind. The covered bridge is a very interesting focal point for the park.
