West Bass Lake (Florence County Park)
Overview
West Bass Lake (Florence County Park) offers a quintessential Northwoods camping experience in Fence, WI. This secluded park provides a serene escape for travelers who want to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Managed by the Florence County Forestry and Parks Department, it maintains a quiet, rustic atmosphere that prioritizes the natural beauty of the Wisconsin wilderness over modern luxuries, making it a favorite for those seeking solitude.
Location & Surroundings
Nestled deep within the timberlands of northeast Wisconsin, the park surrounds the clear waters of West Bass Lake. The landscape is defined by dense forests and rolling hills, providing a lush, green backdrop for every campsite. Because it is located in a remote part of Florence County, visitors are treated to incredibly dark night skies and the frequent sounds of local wildlife, including loons, eagles, and owls that thrive in this protected environment.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive facility, the park features secluded campsites suitable for tents and smaller RVs. You will find basic necessities such as pit toilets and a hand pump for well water, but there are no electric or water hookups available. The park also includes the following features for guest use:
- A well-maintained swimming beach.
- A picnic area with grills and tables.
- A public boat launch for easy water access.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the lake itself, where anglers can target panfish and bass. Since the lake is small and peaceful, it is a haven for kayakers and paddleboarders seeking calm waters. Beyond the park boundaries, visitors can explore the vast Nicolet National Forest or visit the nearby Pine River for trout fishing and scenic waterfall viewing. The surrounding forest roads also offer miles of opportunities for hiking and wildlife photography.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who enjoy boondocking and the freedom of off-grid living. It is best suited for those who appreciate a slower pace and are comfortable without modern utilities. Families looking for a traditional lakeside summer and outdoor enthusiasts searching for a quiet basecamp away from crowded commercial resorts will find this park to be a hidden gem.

Great view, great amenities with new showers & bathrooms. Family friends have been camping here for decades. The place doesn't disappoint. Trails nearby and tubing on the river. Out in the country feel away from the city.

We enjoyed our campsite but some looked small and more suited for tents. Just be aware of which sites may work better for your gear. The beach area had a nice floating dock for folks to swim to and use.

Nice beach and boat dock! Some sites have walking paths right to the water! Love it here! Fireworks every year last weekend in July!

Party campground. 🤦 Besides this, they clear cut the woods around campsites and left the scraps in tall piles around sites. One pile started on fire next to our camper and my husband and another camper put it out before the fire department got there.
