Westport-Union Landing State Beach

Overview

Westport-Union Landing State Beach offers a raw, unfiltered look at the Northern California coast. Located about 19 miles north of Fort Bragg, this state beach encompasses over 40 acres of rugged bluffs and shoreline. Unlike developed resorts, this is a primitive camping experience where the sound of crashing waves serves as the primary entertainment. It is part of the California State Parks system and provides a dramatic backdrop for those looking to escape the crowds and immerse themselves in the untamed nature of Mendocino County.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated right along Highway 1, offering breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean from high atop coastal terraces. The surrounding area is characterized by steep cliffs, hidden coves, and the misty atmosphere typical of the region. Because it is relatively remote, the park feels secluded, providing a sense of solitude that is hard to find in more populated coastal areas. Visitors should prepare for windy conditions and cooler temperatures, as the weather can change rapidly along this stretch of the coastline.

Amenities & Park Features

RVers should arrive fully prepared, as this park is strictly for those who enjoy dry camping. There are no hookups, and notably, there is no potable water available on-site, so bringing a full tank is essential. The sites are spread across three main areas: Abalone Point, Mustang Rock, and North Kibesillah. Facilities are limited to pit toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables. Most sites can accommodate rigs up to 35 feet, but the narrow access roads and cliffside positioning require careful navigation for larger setups.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

While the beach itself is perfect for shore fishing and beachcombing, there are several nearby gems to explore. A short drive south takes you to the charming town of Westport or further to Fort Bragg, home to the famous Glass Beach and the historic Skunk Train. Nature lovers will appreciate the proximity to MacKerricher State Park, which offers paved trails and tide pools. The area is also renowned for seasonal whale watching and provides dramatic photography opportunities along the jagged shoreline and misty horizons.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize scenery over luxury. If you value a boondocking-style experience with million-dollar views, you will find peace here. It is perfect for photographers, anglers, and those who want to disconnect from digital distractions. Because of the lack of amenities and potential for heavy wind, it is best suited for experienced campers who enjoy the rustic charm of the California coast and don't mind the absence of traditional campground conveniences.

This is a small beautiful beach right off the small rv- camping park. It has a nice path that leads down to beach. There is a restroom at park. It is so peaceful at the ocean, watching the waves come in with the glistening of the setting sun. This is a must visit beach!

This is one of the most beautiful places to stay. They offer full hook up for trailers. You can camp right on the beach, but at your own risk! Many trails and paths. Even have a little supply store. Staff is great and very helpful. Great ambiance for the entire family!

Very peaceful, beautiful ocean view, but it is getting very rundown. Water is barely available. Not sure what $35 a nite gives you

Beautiful spot to stop by and enjoy the ocean. The beach itself allows dogs so they can have fun too. You cannot take them on any hiking trails along the beaches but on beach itself they are fine.

We love the sunsets from here and listening to waves crashing, can’t get any better sleep. The only con was no patrol and had another bunch of campers with 12 kids that were taking over our camp spot and then setting off fireworks and mortars late into the early hours of the morning and their trash was going everywhere from the kids tossing it down and parents not supervising at all, had a dad come to get the kids out of our camp I thought but nope rather then walked to the bathroom he walked out in front of our camping spot and whipped it out urinating for everyone to see, it would be nice if a patrol came through ever so often, also had their Doberman running free the entire weekend but he was better behaved then the parents and kids.
