Wharton/Godfrey Bridge Campground

Overview

The Wharton/Godfrey Bridge Campground provides a serene escape into the heart of New Jersey's Pine Barrens. Located within the expansive Wharton State Forest, this campground is known for its quiet, wooded atmosphere and its proximity to the tea-colored waters of the Wading River. It offers a primitive camping experience that prioritizes nature over modern luxuries, making it a favorite for those looking to unplug. This park offers a unique chance to experience the Pinelands as they have been for centuries.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Chatsworth, NJ, the park is surrounded by the unique ecosystem of the Pinelands National Reserve. The landscape is defined by dense pitch pine forests, sandy soil, and a sense of isolation that feels worlds away from the nearby metropolitan areas. Because it sits right on the Wading River, campers have immediate access to one of the most popular paddling routes in the state, offering a peaceful backdrop of rustling leaves and flowing water.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a rustic destination, so visitors should come prepared for a traditional outdoor experience. The park offers primitive campsites equipped with fire rings and picnic tables. While there are no electric or water hookups, the site provides basic essentials:

  • Hand-pumped water for drinking and cooking
  • Standard pit toilets located throughout the loops
  • Convenient river access for launching small watercraft

The narrow roads and tight turns within the campground are best suited for smaller trailers and camper vans rather than large motorhomes.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the water, with kayaking and canoeing being the most popular activities on the Wading River. History enthusiasts can take a short drive to Batsto Village, a restored 19th-century ironworks town that offers a glimpse into New Jersey's industrial past. Hikers will find endless trails throughout Wharton State Forest, including sections of the famous Batona Trail, which showcases the region’s incredible biodiversity and hidden cranberry bogs.

Who This Park Is Best For

Godfrey Bridge is ideal for self-contained RVers and tent campers who appreciate a back-to-basics lifestyle. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sounds of nature rather than the hum of a generator, this is your spot. It is perfect for paddling enthusiasts and birdwatchers who want to explore the wilderness of southern New Jersey without the crowds of a commercial resort. It is a quiet retreat for those who value natural beauty and simple living.

Quiet spot in the Pines after Wading Pines (commercial campground nearby) ends their DJ/band. I stayed on site 34. It's a little awkward to back onto the site if you follow the arrows on the map. It's a nice spot in the pines! Added bonus, the nearby concrete sawmill base, Alloway Monument & Washington Tavern/barn ruins.

Always a great time in the forest. Godfrey's bridge whether you're camping at one of the two campgrounds we're just taking a ride in the woods, it is a great spot to socialize and definitely swim

Pit toilets only. No picnic tables on the sites. Very primitive sort of camp but the sites are mostly very flat and nice. Seems clean. Bring everything you need with you.

This place was OK, I guess. Maybe it was the holiday weekend, but the nearby private campground play the music so loud we couldn’t hear ourselves think. If there wasn’t a huge amount of noise pollution, it might have been a lot more relaxing. Also, take bug spray; the chiggers are very active.
