Whistler's Bend County Park & Campground

Overview

Whistler's Bend County Park & Campground is a premier destination for those seeking the natural beauty of Southern Oregon. Located within a dramatic horseshoe bend of the North Umpqua River, this Douglas County gem offers a peaceful retreat away from the noise of the interstate. It provides a perfect balance between a scenic camping experience and well-maintained public facilities, making it a favorite for regional travelers and passing RVers. The park is widely considered one of the best-kept secrets in the Pacific Northwest for outdoor enthusiasts looking to escape the crowds.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated just east of Roseburg, Oregon, near the small community of Glide. Its most striking feature is the unique geography, as the campground is nearly surrounded by the emerald waters of the North Umpqua River. Towering Douglas firs and rolling hills define the landscape, offering plenty of shade and a deep sense of seclusion. The approach to the park involves winding roads that showcase the lush greenery and rugged beauty characteristic of the Umpqua Valley region, creating a true sense of place for visitors.

Amenities & Park Features

While the park leans toward a natural experience, it features high-quality facilities. RV travelers will find spacious sites, with several providing electric hookups while others cater to those who prefer dry camping. The park is most famous for its 27-hole world-class disc golf course, which winds through the hills and attracts players from across the country. Additionally, visitors have access to:

  • A functional boat ramp for easy river access and fishing.
  • Clean restroom facilities and seasonal hot showers.
  • Spacious picnic shelters for large group events.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The North Umpqua River is a major draw for fly fishing and whitewater rafting enthusiasts looking for adventure. Just a short drive further east, travelers can explore the famous Highway of Waterfalls, which leads directly into the Umpqua National Forest. For those who prefer a slower pace, the surrounding area is part of the Umpqua Valley wine region, featuring several award-winning tasting rooms. The nearby city of Roseburg provides convenient access to local breweries, shopping, and essential services for long-term travelers.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for travelers who prioritize natural scenery and outdoor recreation over a traditional luxury resort atmosphere. It is a true haven for disc golf enthusiasts and water sports fans who appreciate having direct river access for swimming or paddling. Families and RVers looking for a peaceful home base to explore Southern Oregon’s natural wonders will find Whistler's Bend to be an excellent choice. If you prefer a quiet evening by the water over a crowded commercial park, this destination fits your travel style.

We stayed in yurt 3 Aug 22-24th during a heat advisory. The Friday we got there it was 100 degrees and the second day was 96-98 . We were MISERABLE as these yurts don't have an AC unit and they are a HOT BOX, nor did they have a fan. Dollar general to the rescue because we bought a fan from there. They have yellow jacket traps all over this park and they placed them right in the campsites. One was so full we asked the host to switch it out (thankfully he did). These traps attract the yellow jackets ! Saturday morning I took a shower and it was lukewarm. Rather disappointed. The bathrooms were clean but not the showers (spiders all over!). If the bathrooms can have AC the yurts should have them. I think it's wild we have to sweep out a yurt when we pay so much to be there. Around the edges on the inside was full of dust and and dirt despite people having to sweep. They don't seem to be cleaned regularly by staff. The other yurts do not have shade (no trees), thankfully ours did. The heat made this trip miserable.. beautiful campground and the playground was nice. But the day use area (where you'd swim or float) was rather packed and not enjoyable for those who paid to be there- though we managed. Some people are inconsiderate of space and being loud drunks by the river. I will not stay here again in the summer until they get AC units in the yurts.

This place rocks! I'm not usually into campgrounds, but this was perfect for our needs recently. Plenty of room at each site, immaculate bathrooms, huge covered pavilion, river access, playground, and the coolest disc golf course I've seen. It ticked all the boxes for everyone, will happily return one day.

This has always been a beautiful spot, but always felt like it was not being maintained. Over the last ten years that has dramatically changed for the better! The park is beautiful now with better roadways, the most beautiful disk golf course I have ever seen (although Shampoeg is hard to beat). The day use area updates are fantastic and river access is the best. Campgrounds are better defined now, although the lower one could use some updated restrooms, it can't be beat for river views and access. Good job Douglas County Parks for all the work going into this gem.

Enjoyed the park, the river floating right from the day use area to the end of the lower campground. Yellow jacket traps were already in place, but we ended up providing the bees a “sacrifice meal” so we could eat in relative peace for each meal. The only reason for not giving a 5 star rating is the showers. While they are free, the spray time was literally 2 seconds before it shut off. I have long hair and after a day of floating the River it needed to be washed. You try to wet, lather, shampoo and rinse on 2 second increments. I invite the Douglas County Commisioners to partake in the flat out exercise session of showering. I get saving on water but 3 seconds is not even enough time to rinse your face off let alone actually wet, rinse, wash and rinse without some gymnastics and hand/wrist strength. We ended up showering together so we could share the workout fun and actually get the soap and shampoo rinsed off properly. Overall, the camp hosts cleaned the restrooms daily and the park was clean. We camped in space 41, upper campground with full hookups.
